Chapter 36
Frank finally dragged himself to bed after another twenty minutes of retching into the toilet. He lay down but he couldn’t sleep. He couldn’t be pregnant, that was just stupid. He didn’t even know why he’d picked up the stupid test in the first place, I mean obviously he couldn’t be pregnant. That test had to be wrong, or maybe they just worked differently because he wasn’t a girl. He’d got all these things going around in his head. He wanted to talk to Gerard about it, but he could imagine how ridiculous that conversation would sound. He sighed and lay back, he had no choice, he would have to go to the doctors. He’d been like this for nearly two months now. He closed his eyes. He’d go to the doctors tomorrow if he didn’t feel any better. Tomorrow, yeah.
He hadn’t been asleep for very long when he felt someone shaking him. “Frank wake up, it’s important!” Frank opened his eyes to see his mom standing there, she looked serious. “Come down stairs we need to talk.” Frank got up and followed his mom. This couldn’t be good. His mom never looked this serious. She knocked on Jo’s door and told her to come downstairs too. They followed their mom into the kitchen and she motioned for them to sit at the table.
Frank and Jo sat down opposite each other wondering what was going on. Their mum had her back to them for a couple of minutes. When she turned around, she was holding a box in her hand. She sat down silently and placed the box on the table. On top of the box was the test from the trash in the bathroom. Frank felt the blood run from his face. “Well can you explain?” Asked their mother sharply, Frank opened his mouth to say something but he noticed she wasn’t looking at him, she was looking at Jo. “Um…You’re like having another baby or something?” Asked Jo. “I’m deadly serious Jo!! This isn’t mine which means it’s got to be yours. Please don’t tell me you are!” “It’s not mine mom I swear, I don’t even know what you do with them.” “don’t be stupid it’s not mine and it’s hardly going to be Franks is it?” She looked at Frank, he opened his mouth but no words came out. “Oh my god Frank. No. You’re not. You’re supposed to be gay. You’re supposed to be with Gerard.” “I am gay, and I am still with Gerard. The test…well….it’s mine.” Frank waited for it, he was sure his mom would tell him not to be stupid or that it was ridiculous, but she didn’t. He looked back up at her, she was just staring at him. “Frank, you can’t be pregnant. You’re not a girl.” “I know, but…..” “Right, you’re going to the doctors Frank, tomorrow. You’re not pregnant but you’re still sick and we need to find out what it is.” Frank nodded and got up from the table and walked slowly to his room. He wasn’t going to the doctors no way, not now his mom had found that test. She’d want to know what the doctor said and even though he couldn’t be pregnant, he still had it there in the back of his mind.
The next morning, Frank’s mom woke him up. “I’m going to work, you have to be at the doctors for 10.30 ok. Make sure you don’t miss it Frank.” Frank nodded and turned over waiting for her to leave the room. No he wasn’t going. He went back to sleep and was woken up by the doorbell not too long after. He went downstairs and was greeted by Gerard. He looked gorgeous today. Frank looked at him and they kissed, as they broke apart and Frank looked into Gerards eyes, he felt awful keeping this from him but it wasn’t true. Everything would be alright and back to normal in a few weeks. It had to be.
They sat on the sofa together and started watching a movie. Frank looked up at the clock every so often checking the time. At 11.30 the phone rang. Frank knew who it was and he took the phone into the kitchen so Gerard wouldn’t hear. “So what did the doctor say” Came the voice on the other end “Did you mention the test?” “Yeah and um…he said that it gave that result because guys aren’t supposed to use them. You can stop freaking out about it now.” “well what’s wrong with you then?” “Just a virus, look mom I need to go. Gee’s here and it’s not fair on him if I’m talking on the phone to you when we’re supposed to be spending time together.” “Ok well I don’t think it’s a good idea that Gerards around you while you’re sick. It wouldn’t be fair on him if he caught it.” “He won’t mom he’ll be fine.” Frank put the phone down and cuddled back up to Gerard on the sofa. Gerard slid his arm around Frank and kissed the top of his head. “Who was on the phone Frankie?” “Just my mom seeing if I’m feeling any better?” “And? Are you.” “Yeah a bit” Lied Frank. Gerard smiled “Good, I hate seeing you so ill Frankie.” Frank buried his face into the crook of Gerards neck. He hated lying to anyone, especially Gerard. But he had to, at least until he was certain what was going on.
