Sorry, Victim, wasn't trying to be in any way superior. The word is, after all, only 8 letters ...
My dictionary defines it as "metrical scanning, the way verse scans".
I interpret the above as obeying the rythm of the verse i.e. if the rythm dictates say 9 syllables per line then 10 or 12 are not going to scan - they'll be out of Kilter, as they say north of the Border.
So, if I say:

The cat sat on the mat
Upon my bowler hat
And then the blighter sh*t
Into my bowler hat ...

That scans because the rythm works. If, on the other hand, I say:

The cat sat on the mat,
On the uppermost rim of my bowler hat,
And then evacuated its bowels, and I then said "out, cat, scat"

The rythm is lost, even though there's still a bit of rhyme there.

Hope that helps a little bit ... No patronising whatever intended.
