And might i add i never, ever use tampons, simply because i also find them dangerous, and i've only used them once in the 10 years i've had my periods, and i got thrush by using them. I didn't find them comfortable or easy to use. So i'm comfortable with using pads.

Dr Philip Tierno, professor of microbiology at New York University Medical School, has spent 23 years doing independent research into TSS and its link to tampons. It boils down to the fact that the toxin that causes TSS grows in the sort of environment created inside the body around a tampon. What goes into a tampon and how long it is left in the body are both major contributing factors.

Dr Tierno has come up with a persuasive argument for going organic. As with other organically grown crops, because non-intensive farming methods are used, there are no pesticide residues to contend with. "The bottom line is that you can get TSS with synthetic tampons but not with an all-cotton tampon," says Dr Tierno. He says there are strict case criteria defining TSS, including a temperature of 102, rash and hypo-tension. However women can have variations on these reactions; a slightly lower temperature, for example, and those symptoms might go unreported because they don't meet the strict definition.

"People think TSS was a health scare of the 80s, that it has gone away, and it's true that manufacturers changed the blends in their tampons and people got educated about the right way to use them. But the problem is coming back as manufacturers start trying to increase the absorbencies of their products." His advice is clear: "Never use tampons if you have ever had TSS. Use all-cotton products, don't use higher absorbencies and don't leave a tampon in for longer than eight hours. Above all, you are the proponent of your own health - do your bit by raising your brand of tampons as a concern with your doctor."

I've just had a conversation with someone about this, and I'm actually seeing that maybe the cup looks ok. I don't like the others though.
I dunno.

I admit I've only read the first page, but - it's just blood? It's not that gross. Everyone's gonna have their own opinion about this and some are gonna be squeamish about menstrual blood, but from my point of view, it's not that big a deal and it's good to share info about these things.

well, i support moon cups. and i had no idea that tampons and pads had these dangerous chemicals in them so i think i will now be reconsidering what i use each month.

i find it quite sad that this thread has been so negative, seems like flower fairy has been given a hard time for sharing some information with us. as she said, she was just offering this information she wasnt forcing it upon anyone, it would be easy enough just to say 'its not for me' but there has been quite a few arsey comments and some plain rude ones. no need.

i will admit to not being the most environmentally friendly...i do use pads and tampons, i use disposable nappies on my little girl. but i do recycle, i do my washing at 30, dont leave things on stand by, i walk wherever i can, i use reusable shopping bags. i think every little helps. cant help but feel a little bit riled when folk say 'i dont give a **** about the environment' - just selfish in my opinion.

If other people want to use mooncups or reusable pads then good on them, but I'm quite happy with sanitary towels and tampons.

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

I've heard on the grapevine that TSS and tampon use is so very rare nowadays anyway.
And also to actually develop TSS you need to keep a tampon in for a long time (over a day)

Personally I don't think I'll be switching but thankyou for the information.

Ha, I agree with Cathy, poor bloke at NY Uni.
Anyway, personally, mooncups/re-useables are not for me, It's possible i'm just scared of them, and my periods are heavy anyway, and wouldn't want the risks of leaking etc.
Like others, I may not like the fact of re-useables etc, but i do my washes 30, get buses often (cant drive yet), recycle paper, glass etc at home, turn off lights etc.
I like that the OP made this thread, i just find it sad that people have reacted so negatively, when they could have just said "Sorry, not for me".
As for the blood situation, saying it's gross, I have a slight "thing" with it too, it's just psychological in my opinion...

^^ rather unnecessary.

i think people here maybe need to either open their minds a little bit and stop claiming all this is 'gross' - no one needs like thirty comments with people being like 'oh my gosh, how disgusting', if you have no point to make, it'd be best not to just voice opinions like that. orrr, maybe you could just not read this thread if it offends you so greatly?
this isn't aimed at anyone specifically, but it just seems like people are kinda attacking daisy, she's not screaming 'doitdoitdoit or elsssse', she's just showing people the options.

everyone is entitled to an opinion. admittedly some people need to think about how theyre wording things, but you can try and stop peoples opinions.
