I'm sorting out dissertation stuff just now, but I'm pretty much set. I have my supervisor (who really needs a hug, he's so stressed out) and I've done all my ethics forms and proposal forms. Now I'm just waiting on my supervisor checking over some of my stuff before I can start the actual research.

Some people are better than others at reply times. You can either wait until they do and run the risk they forget about you (since it's such a busy time just now) or you could phone them if you want. Could potentially be awkward though!

i dont want to bug her - she was really strict and scary, but that may just be me and my lack of ability to read people properly... :/

bt yeah, it's like i only emailed her yetserday but i really need to know whats happening because if i have to stay up i need to get accommodation sorted, if i get to go home, i need to find somehwere at home to collect data, and if she's not going to be my supervisor, i need to find another one... its all confusing...

i dont think i'll be able to do my dissertation... im not independant enough :(

plus the fact that she told me to get in touch after my exams - which is on monday theyre all finished. But i felt the meeting went really badly so wanted to reassure her that i was willing to put in all teh work... and now i dont know if ive done soethingstupid by emailing ehr so soon. :(

I always say that it's better to contact sooner rather than later. Especially at this time of year with everyone so busy and students heading home. It's only fair you know what is going on.

What are your plans for your dissertation? Why is it not independent enough?

When is your dissertation hand-in date? This time next year? Most people don't have many clear ideas on what they want, some don't even have a topic that can be narrowed down. It's why meeting with potential supervisors can be really helpful, you can throw ideas around and they'll tell you what they think of them.

i dont have any ideas though - thats the problem. i have no idea what i ant to do. and my meeting on monday was with an animal psychology person who was saying that i needed t obe committed to the project, and then she went on to like she had 14 yer olds coming up and telling her exactly what they wanted to do and asking for help to get there, and that most people only wanted to do such and such cause they seen it on tv and thought it looked good blah blah blah... i felt so thick and out of place :(

and my hand in date is in december because it's onl a half dissertation because im doing joint honours...

it doesnt help that we dont have advisors and nobody knows anything.plus the fact as i said i think i was reading this woman all wron. I wish my head was straighter... haha.

sorry, im complining now, aren't i? I'm just confused, sorry :(

No, Drampty, you're not complaining. My hand in date is December too. Has there been any topics you've been interested in? Any lecturers who you really like and find their stuff quite good? It can take a while to settle on a topic.

Well, that's you on the right lines, sort of. I'd look up some journal articles on the kind of thing you'd be doing and see what is out there at the moment.

its confusing though, 'cause she was on about working withthe painted dogs at edinburgh zoo cause i said i was interested in dogs. but my friend who was also wanting to work with them and got in touch with the zoo directly said the famale is pregnant so theyre in isolatio, so obviously that wont be happenning. her other suggestion was with dogs in kennels over in glasgow or something, so my email asked if it would be possible to do that, but form home, and as i said shes still not replied...

Do you have any animal centres near where you live during the summer? Places where you could contact and ask if you could do your project there?

Hey all, I am Paws, and in Uni, working on my master`s degree. Currently I am trying to make myself finish an essay, a great one, me at my cleverest writing a slightly gory essay. I love it....but just can`t get myself to work. Procratisnation all over the place. Even worse: I have jsut bought new dvds (me, broke? Naaaaaah :p) and I find watching those more important. It is, isn`t it? :p

Good luck on all your works, exams, uni-stuff!

drampty, I'm just finishing my research project. I ended up using the theory of planned behaviour to predict students' lecture attendance, which doesn't sound that interesting but it meant I had a specific theory to work with so I could write about its development etc in the introduction bit and I had a framework for doing the study. I wasn't really that interested in my project to be honest, I didn't care what the results were but it was fairly simple to do once I'd got started.

Hey Paws, I know the feeling!

Exam was ok. My topics didn't come up (actually cried and considered just walking out! Lol!) so I had to BS my way through bilingualism and the tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon. They were ok but I had no dates or names or specific studies to put in. It was all "it has been found that" with no specifics. Which will probably lose me marks.
But I now don't care. :) Exams are over, now I just have to finish the research write up and I am finished. So all-nighter tonight just in case there's more left to do than I think. I reckon I deserve a little break first though.

Had a little moan to my supervisor today about how many assessments I've had and how many people I've heard comment on how stupid it is that they expect us to be able to perform well in everything when there's o much in such a short space of time. She agreed and said that she doesn't think exams really test our knowledge anyway (which I agree with). Why can't all lecturers think like that? Then we might not have to do exams!

Haha yes, everything does seem more interesting when you are studying!

shadow-light--Good luck!

Alison--I'm sorry that your topics didn't come up, but I'm sure you did okay. I agree with you on exams not testing knowledge and congrats on finishing!

And good luck simi, since it says that you're revising

I have to do more filming for my project later..... fun.... not

Thank you for all of your help and support. I will no longer be coming to RYL. Semi-explanation will be inside my profile.
