As a product of the post-World War Two European diaspora, Skrzynecki’s connections to both his homeland and the hostel are signified as transitory with the constant pace of language and enjambment. Migrant Hostel from Skrzynecki’s suite of poems Immigrant Chronicle is based off his two years detainment at the Parkes Migrant Centre. An impression of uncertainty is given with ‘Sudden departures from adjoining blocks and nationalities ‘Circling to get (their) bearings’. The motif of birds, both as homing pigeons and birds of passage represent Skrzynecki’s travel and his insecurity being ‘Unaware of the season/Whose track (he) would follow’. Whilst the nationalities struggle to retain their identity through seeking ‘each other out instinctively… years and place names/Recognised by accents’, this comfort of familiarity by culture and geography is ‘Partitioned off at night/By memories of hunger and hate’ by the history and memories of World War Two.

Since our luck ran out and left us here

We are male and female. We are artists, athletes, and students. We have depression, PTSD, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, or maybe no diagnosis at all. Some of us were abused, some not. We come from all walks of life and can be any age. We are every race or religion that you can think of. Our common link is this: We are in pain. We self-injure. And we are not freaks.
God hath not promised
