Yeah this should be a safe haven, but I would hate for it to give a false sense of security that saps peoples abilities to cope in the "real world". Life is, quite unfortunately, full of triggers and upsets.

Yes we are a self harm site but the most important part of self harm is the actual emotions behind it. What causes us to do what we do not how each idividual person feels they should cut themselves.

However, RYL is supposed to be a safe haven for everyone. A place where people who are going through similar things can come for support and camaraderie.

In short, I do think that anything a bit creative where self harming oneself is concerned, should be kept secret, but things that are really obvious should be allowed. No one here is that stupid as to not realise "sharp means potential tool".

Er, I think that's all I wanted to say :p

Given how this site is used, i'd be surprised to see "common" tools censored from posts; admittedly there isn't a need to post about methods (same tool, but different methods can have very different outcomes); but - out of interest - would this lead to censorship of articles on the site?

The articles available for informing people who don't self harm (ie parents, partners, siblings, teachers etc) often mention common tools, whether the articles are here, the Royal College of Psychs, thesite.org or the BBC Health pages. If the "tool" is openly mentioned within information aimed at the public as a whole, i would struggle to see how it could (or should) be censored here.

Unless i'm barking up the wrong tree here, the method in question is one that occured to me when first reading this thread but also, it's a method that isn't "advertised" within easily accesible information and i think is a good example of what is and isn't "common" knowledge within information available about self harm.

Goodness knows if that's made any sense. As a side note though, unless for the FA team, most posts could be made without reference to a tool. Unless that is, RYL takes up the stance of Sex and The City and refers to a tool in the same way they did sex, when the wee girl was around!

^The problem isn't the common tools though, they're fine in most circumstances to be mentioned. It is when it comes to it being more descriptive or *tools* people wouldn't usually think of.

Like I'm in my bedroom right now if I tried hard enough I could probably do severe damage to myself with absolutely anything in sight as I have seen some very bizarre, traumatic and devasting cases in the past so know how simple everyday things can be used as tools.

The worry me & Aidey have is not based on the common things used. It's if some of the things we come across in PMs were to come out that serious problems would arise as I have been stunned by some people's creativity and obviously we are told how they were used etc so as to help advise them as clear as possible. If things like that were on the FAF or elsewhere and not editted out then we're talking severe damage to the community could leadfrom it.

I personally don't want all mention of what is used to be gone because this is a SH site and it shouldn't be seen as a taboo here aswell as if things were banned then where would you draw the line; could you say you cut vegetables with a knife as that is a common tool.

Therefore, I don't want to change the rules from as they are as I feel if you do then there are more probs with when to draw the line.

Dramatic

^^ I agree.
About..5 months ago i read how someone "burnt" themselves in quite a descriptive way on the FAF, which then led me to try it (slightly stupid) - it was edited out once a FAA saw it, i think only a handful of members saw it, and as i don't usually burn..er, it just gave me massive tips.

But just from that small experience i can understand the worry if more..unusual "tools"/methods came out.

But yes, i don't think the usual "tools" should necessarily be sensored, but i've stated that way above ^^.

Hmn, i think my point may have been misunderstood; the method (type/form of SH) that (i think) Eleutheros meant was a good example of what isn't a common method and as such should be censored but that tools which are commonly mentioned within easily accessible information don't have such a great need for censoring. I'm aware of some pretty "interesting" methods and have encountered some strange practises, especially here. What does also need to be looked at though (as i think has been mentioned) is that tools (ie ones commonly known) aren't necessarily as dangerous in terms of information, as the method that someone may write about aswell: even commong tools can be used in "uncommon" ways.

Hope that makes (more) sense!

I don't think that common tools should be censored as to be honest, it doesn't take too much to realise that a razor blade or knife can be used for self-harm. However, I do think that less common ones should be edited out. Quite a lot of that is due to the fact that I really want to know about the above method talked about (I'm not asking to be told, I agree it should be kept secret, this is me being self-destructive) and I think that shows how tip-sharing could so easily happen if it were allowed.

I think I know what it is. I'm pretty sure I do, I had to edit it out of someone's post once. And that sort of thing I agree should remain censored as it's not a "common" method of SH at all but strangely enough is plastered around the internet.

Re-edited, heh.

I agree with everything most of whats been said..and yeh thers some things i would never have thought of that i've came across. One in particular makes me feel faint - it wasnt an uncommon tool, just the method. Thankfully it was edited quickly by the mods and i think only a few of us saw it. It wasnt the tool being mentioned that bothered me, it was the depth of description on the method. That isnt a dig at anyone btw i cant even remember who or when it was posted, it was a realli long time ago. its just one of those things i cant forget

But yes- rules should stay the same
