Not for forum mods, you're picked by the existing mods.
Most of the other staff teams allow you to put your name forward, but generally new members are picked by the current teams.
I think Liv mentioned on the last page, they are already considering new mods, but it's a long process and doesn't just happen overnight. It's also been mentioned that Harley is looking into this, but it still can't just be fixed instantly.
It doesn't matter where you come from; it matters where you go.

It sounds like for now, we're all just going to have to rally together as a team and let the mods know we appreciate all of the efforts that they are putting in to getting rid of the spam, as well as all of us just sticking two fingers up to it and ignoring it the best we can. Doesn't sound like much all else we can do, apart from post report when required, and hope that Harley figures something out soon.
Out of interest, how does somebody become a mod? Can I volunteer? At the moment I am finding the level of spam is putting me off coming here. I know the team here are doing their best, and I don't mean it as a criticism ... I just find it distressing is all
It is distressing and it doesn't help my OCD because I want to delete all the spam myself but can't :(

I dont know why people are ignoring what Im saying and posting the same things over and over, its incredibly rude to just ignore what I have said simply because its not the answers people want.
We will not be giving members mod powers, for one thing they will be able to see the mod boards. They will have ALL the mod powers not just the ability to delete things and what about if someone decides to just start randomly deleting threads or abusing their powers?
We have a list of people we want to make moderators, however their are reasons that they have no been made mods yet. Even if we did have a whole new batch it takes time for us to train new people up,something we are all short on right now.
It is not the FAAs job to delete threads,they have their own jobs to do, that would be the same as me drafting in chat mods to delete threads....not their domain either.
The amount of spam actually isnt that big at the moment. Today I thought there was loads to delete, but it turned out to be one person posting 61 times an once those were gone there was no more spam.
I dont even want to get into it affecting mental health, honestly I feel like I will be really rude. You just have to look at it, you dont have to spend time and time again deleting walls of spam on a million threads, complaining about it is just making it worse.
Harley is trying his best to fix it, we have been emailing him daily and he has been trying but its not as simple as some people seem to think.
This negativity just makes it a million times worse. We all have other things to do on RYL, I havent done anything to do with the chat mods for ages, because I come on here, read at least 10 PMs a day complaining about spam, fix that and then Im done. Members from this site who I dont even know have been finding me on facebook to message me about spam, how ridiculous is that? My life outside of this website is not a free for all for people to contact me about spam.
I know that people arent criticising us, but it feels like that.
If nothing else, please take it what I have said because Im not saying this for my own amusement.
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.

I've tried to join 3 different forums this week [non MH related], and am still waiting for an admin to activate my account. Because these forums no longer allow immediate activation via email because of spam. It sucks, as I'm missing out on what those forums might have offered me. So yeah, at least your members here, and RYL still allows immediate membership registration activation.
Liv, I'm just gonna waltz in and say what a wonderful job you guys do and definitely think that mods need to be appreciated a whole lot more. It's not easy, you get loads of hate and everyone complains to you all the time about stuff so yeah. Well done. Keep it up.
Also, in reference to the spam, it's pretty easy to spot threads that are just spam so just don't click on it?
