I do think that there is something to be said for self regulating. Or self policing. If persons in RYL know what is expected of them, i.e. the rules- then there isn't any bruhaha when there are consequences to breaking them.
I once did moderating at a professional level (for an association), and I did it because I believed in it (unpaid). I had approxiamate shifts and responsibilities. I think from the language used by some of the mods in this thread it sounds like they are suffering from burnout.
I do not totally agree about the grow up thing. If I make a mistake I would like it pointed out to me. But I think that most people with MH issues want a non- judgemental, safe environment. I have accepted that I cannot use chat because of its culture and not being able to relate- but RYL has seen me through several years of isolation.
I do think any increase in forum mods would require training and networking to keep everyone on the same page. I do think there is some liability that the site, and responsibility that mods need to take if people are at risk of SH/ suicidal thoughts. They are not moaners and whiners. Just like the mods- real people with real problems looking to help. Also, forums can be locked for only the mods to vent etc- I don't feel great finding out that I am such a burden on the mods and I would panic- like where is Harley?!! I am in neither the UK or US, so RYL is literally a lifeline for me.
This site should never not have a real world link/ back up. There should be a roster/ protocol for different things- and it should be voluntary, but at the same time- an honourable job, even if it is unpaid.
I may not be chosen for a mod, but I try to cause less chaos and put out more caring for the times that I come online and need someone to share with.

~Happy tomatoes together we will be~
You say toe- may- toe, I say toe- mah- toe:
Let's call the whole thing- red
“It’s time to lead the third revolution, which is not to say we want to be at the top of the world, but to say we want to change the world. Because the way the world has been designed by men is not working. It’s not working for women, it’s not working for men,
it’s not working for polar bears.” Arianna Huffington 2014
How about, instead of mods needing to be contacted 24/7 to stop drama escalating.. people just... grow... up? Ignore the people causing drama? Leave if it is upsetting? Crazy stuff!
I agree.

I would be willing to be a forum mod but I doubt I'd get chosen. I come on this site frequently and I don't want it to disappear, but I wouldn't be willing to be given a rostered time to come on.

Agree.
I wish Harley would come back.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break
that its heart may stand in the sun,
so must you know pain.
There are only two ways in which one can live their life. One is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as though everything is.
Are you kidding?
You really think its viable to force mods to come on at a certain time every day. This is NOT paid work, this is something we do in our spare time. You expect me to come home from work, do uni work and then sit on RYL at my alloted time? That is so completely ridiculous, what if I have something else to do, or god forbid want to do something thats not work or getting abuse on RYL....should I then be 'fired' for not being on at my time slot?
And another thing, only one mod has my number, because shes a friend in real life.....theres no way I should be rung or text on my mobile phone to be told to come onto RYL.
I cannot actually believe Im reading this.
THIS THIS THIS. Except the cell phone thing. I happen to be the only forum mod in the US. I cannot afford to call or receive calls from other countries. It's not that I hate them, but I do not have the funds and if I did, I would be unwilling to spend them on that JUST so that I could receive calls/texts from another country about a website. Basically, this is a website.
This is not real life. You have the capability to turn this off and walk away. I'm fairly certain no one on this website is actually chained to their computers.

As it is, I think the reaction time we generally have is pretty good. I've been flamed here and it was taken care of fairly shortly.

I know it's been said, but if people behaved like adults, there would be far less drama and far fewer problems here.
There was a time when Harley had a cell phone specifically for receiving messages about RYL emergencies, but I'm guessing that time is long past. Personally, I don't think the people who say they want to be mods know what they are getting into in many cases. I would never ever EVER, even if I were paid, go back to being a moderator. That's not to say there weren't good things about it. It's nice to feel like you are helping to keep a place running smoothly and helping people, but the payoff just was never worth the bullshit. Harley was around pretty regularly when I was a moderator, so I can't imagine how much harder it is now. I was head chat mod for a very short time but I was never given any special powers to mod or demod anyone. I just had the power to tally up votes for new mods and call for meetings. Being in a position of power with no actual power can be very frustrating. Ultimately, there isn't much appreciation shown. Then again, every now and then when new chat mods do come along, I am shocked at the choices, and in those cases I've yet to be proven wrong about someone's lack of suitability to modding. Being a mod who has to work with another mod who doesn't know what they are doing can be pretty frustrating as well, so that affects all this too. I hope things get better for the chat mod team soon. I don't know how this has been affecting the forums, but good luck with that too.
If you DON'T like the way this site is modded, if you hate the fact that they spend every ounce of their spare time here so you can happily woe and doom and gloom all day long without anybody telling you they disagree, you are free to leave. I see those mods working their asses off here. There are so few of them and so many of us. If you want to be unappreciative of how hard these people work and have zero understanding that they do all they can, the logout button is at the top of the screen.
I think all of the mods have said everything really. Fact is we all have lives, jobs, uni, appointments, college, etcetcetc. just as the next person and we can't be here 24/7.
And [to whoever suggested 'modshifts'] - despite the fact that that would be useful, it's simply not feesable with the general learning of things/discussions that have to be completed over every issue that arises.
Now, who mentioned a party? I think we could use one!
"Be nice. Think happy thoughts. Champion silver linings. Love all things (not just cute things like babies and kittens) & when you do love - love like they do in power ballads (you know like on a cliff with the wind in your hair and your eyes shut, knowing you'll never know love like this). Watch out for dog poo. Smile at people - even grumpy ones. Remember anything is possible & whatever you do always try to look on the bright side."
where was mods earlier when chat was abushed by worst ever person to land into chat, there was personal insults and worse im here like i think 3 years but the one person came in and turned a whole room upside down for hour or more and not one mod was around to just zap em. it was worst ever lanuage is to read . sexual comment and pooping peoples mouths it was discustn.. and that was in room 2
Laughter is a direct route to the soul. It broadens your perspective, keeps you healthy, and makes an unbearable situation alot easier to deal with.
Biba- like others have said, there are very limited mods at the moment, and they are already going way beyond the call of duty to keep things in order. But they can't physically be around 24/7. The incident you refer to does sound rather unpleasant, and I'm by no means suggesting that it should go unpunished, but I would remind you that there's three other rooms that you could go to if someone was offending you in room 2?
lucy. there are limited mods at the moment as previously said. the troll also came into room 3, and logs were taken, and as soon as a member of the mod team came in, it was reported and stuff. you have been here long enough, you know that if there is a problem and no mods, you, or someone in the room needs to take a log and either pm it to a mod, or use the chatmod email address. even when we had an abundace of mods there were times when there wasn't one in chat, they cannot be always there. but the mods we have are doing their damned hardest to keep chat running as efficiantly and as safely as possible. and i personally and many others think they are doing amazingly with what they have.
Sometimes it is easier to hide where noone knows who you are.
i often wonder if the community instead of being all 'i'll be a mod' spent an hour a day/wekk/whatever going through threads, reporting problems as this would cut down the mod team's time having to look for problems.

There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
