And what if nobody wants to manage RYL? Shall we just close it down cause Harley's trying to start a business and doesn't have the time? Or would you then settle for what it is now (which in reality is still giving people plenty of support)?

V4 will, I doubt, be some magic panacea which will solve everybody's problems, but simply be an attempt to make things easier.

Tony.
Then why couldn't you have let us known this earlier/sooner/whatever?

But thank you for letting us know what he's up to.

Absolutely. And my issue is certainly not with whichever version we may be on. However, for a forum to operate effectively, there does need to be somebody with some sort of administrative power; as an example, there are rules that have been in existence for years now and still haven't been put into the forum rules because only Harley has the power to do that - which is confusing for new members. Also, the main site used to be a real focal point of RYL - it was a bloody brilliant resource (I remember under V2, there were members who didn't even realise that there were forums, because they used the main site so much), and it's a shame that we're unable to do things to make the main site what it once was.

Also, if you took my first post to be pushing for the actual version, I think you missed the point. I don't care whether or not V4 comes or not - I was simply asking for an update, having not heard anything since before Christmas (and last we heard, he was hoping to have it live by Christmas or, at the latest, Easter - so an update would be quite nice).

Even if he is owner of the forum in name only, I'm sure there are lots of people (myself included) who would be willing to take on greater powers to actually get things done around here.

I think I should clarify: I don't actually care about V4. That's not what I'm after particularly. I'm sure it'll be great when it comes, but right now my biggest gripe is the inability we have to do anything around here because of the lack of people with power, and the lack of information we're getting about it.

Like I've said a lot before, I don't mind what's happening with V4, whether it's coming today, tomorrow or next year - all that would be nice is an update on what's happening, and somebody who's active with the ability to do things. I don't think that's a big expectation. I understand that delegating powers, especially when you're not around to monitor them, is always a huge risk - but it's something that has been discussed for years now, would ease the pressure on Harley considerably, and would placate people (including myself).

Like other people have said, too, it's not that people don't want to contribute towards RYL - quite the opposite, there are a lot of people who are wanting and willing to do things for the site. But it's such a disincentive when every time we try to do anything, we get blocked every stage of the way because Harley isn't around.

RYL got so great because Harley had a vision for the site and pushed forward with it, with a good team behind him. It's great to hear that Harley is doing well and just busy, it's just a shame to not have Harley or anybody else with the administrative capacity to continue pushing for RYL.

This, but the bolded part especially.

I'll try to divert Harley's attention to this, in between the very many things he has going on. Meanwhile, let me remind the knockers that over the past 11 or more years he has devoted tens of thousands of hours of his own time, for no financial reward whatever, towards the site. It's possible that with all his other pressures he just needs to catch his breath and devote a little time to his own affairs ...

Tony.

Never surrender.

I'm really not trying to be funny... but this isn't a hiatus of a few months. This is YEARS. This is YEARS of staff members' hard work going down the drain. All the mods, CT members, supporters, etc. ALSO have their own affairs & need time to catch their breath - & they are doing this relatively on their own.

If he doesn't have time for RYL anymore - why can't he just tell us? We would respect him much more if he held his hands up & said "look, it's a massive project that I'm struggling to find the time for - but I will delegate certain essential tasks to (people)".

I think there should be more than one admin on this forum ... am not sure of the powers that the mods have to ban people who are spamming or those who are breaking rules ...but i think that Harley doing all this on his own is a bad thing as he is only one person who also has his own life to deal with.

What would really help build community spirit and morale?

I don't doubt that, Tony. In fact, for the last number of years, a lot of us have come up with a lot ideas to help Harley catch his breath and to give him more time to devote to his own life. Every time was either countered to say that it wasn't needed, or flat out ignored. Harley's maintained the site, and I don't think that anybody doesn't appreciate what he's done. However, I also don't think that people are asking for too much - an update, first and foremost, and perhaps delegate powers just a little bit to somebody who can be around a bit more, just so that things can actually get done (or an accurate timescale of when V4 will actually be around, so we know what does and doesn't need doing before then, to maintain RYL as a quality site).

Like I said earlier, Harley posted in November to say that an update was due very soon, so it's not something that he's not aware of.

No, Taliesin and Jigoku - all I'm trying to do is defend him as best I can against the conflicting pressures he's currently facing. And he's not a child, nor do I regard him as such.

I greatly doubt that many people on the site realise quite how much of his life he has devoted to it ... I hate to see this sort of dissension.

Tony.

But, on the original topic (I'm sorry you feel people don't appreciate the extent of the work that Harley has put in; from my point of view, you might be right, since I never actually knew Harley) is it unreasonable that the people who are currently trying to work to keep the forum running should ask for a little feedback, a little more control over the running, as Harley is understandably busy with his life? I don't think people are being unreasonable with this request.

That's all well and good, but Harley should be posting defending himself in his own words.
