I have again bumped into this thread at 'the wrong time' >.<
I agree for the most part Tiff, but there are already psychiatric intensive care units/secure psychiatric hospitals, secure children's homes, long term nursing homes for mentally ill adults [I know a couple of people in their 20's and 30's in a nursing home due to severe BPD]. There is a lot of supported accommodation out there, though it is hard to get into, I know. I think though, most people would be better treated [albeit with more support than there is now] in the community. However there are some people who have needed to be in hospital so much and need so many admissions that it would be better for them to remain there rather than have the disruption of sectioning every few months or so. I guess an asylum working in the right way offers a secure community of its own. I just despise the term because of what it signifies to me, much like the asylums shown in the programme.
Its tragic that Richard died. :(
