Agreed, since most of our problems come out of people forgetting the rules (or ignoring them completely) in the heat of passion. Guidelines are ment to be as unrestrictive as possible so that they don't stifle the flow of things but also help keep debates from turning into arguments.

And I agree with User_Name (sorry, don't know your real name) in that we don't need any more rules as long as people pay attention to the ones we have now. The need for added rules comes when people stop abiding by the rules they've willing agreed to follow by having an account here.

I think that's the real question here: as a community are we going to able to "keep our heads" and honor the agreement we've made to follow the rules when we disagree and need to debate it, or does the staff need to set more limits?

*yes, I'm aware I just reiterated what Heidi said earlier

I feel that giving members the freedom to debate as long as it remains within RYL's current rules is a responsibility, obviously if they break the rules actions should be taken, such as the current rule framework already allows for. Asking for more rules implies that you don't believe members can be trusted to remain civil to each other.

Quite. I also feel that this kind of thing is so intensely passive-agressive that it can be a form of hidden bullying.
Couldn't agree more.

I don't think I ever said after you've stated your point you should leave. If I did, i didn't mean to >.<

In a debate you should be able to give logical rebuttals to the other sides argument. If you can't then you're points have no bottom and therefore become... pointless (again i can't think of the word i need). But a person can't just say "this is my opinion it's right" and then get angry and stuff if someone refutes it. Which has happened more than once.

And it's hard to post when you're frightened of being pulled apart and anyone who's had any issues with bullying knows that. I am willing to fight for my opinion to be heard but not at the sake of being made unhappy. Does that make any sense at all?

Right, I don't think guidelines are totally necessary but I think people must try and see things from both sides of the coin as it were before they make a thread o they can ensure that it will not turn out like the post is an attack on a person/ group of people. Also, people should realise that everyone will have different views whether just differ slightly or are on the other side ofthe spectrum and instead of those just being dismissed people should try to understand where they are coming from. As well as that people should make sure their post isnt written in a way suggesting my opinion is right, everyone with a different thought trail is therefore wrong and not actually properly reading through or attempting to grasp the other people's points of view.

A lot can be gained from debates but that is only if everyone is prepared to look at it from both sides and realise not everyone will agree and that some people do have some sensitivities. And also, people should only make a comment if they are prepared to at least check back and see if there is anything regarding that. If people make a post and then say at the end I won't come back on here so I won't see what happens then to me that seems like that person does not want to pay attention to anyone elses views and isn't prepared to question their own and what is the point in being part of a debate by one post but not seeing the outcome? If they felt strong enough about their debate to want to make a contribution then surely they must want to see what happens?
