“Guys, GUYS I’ve found her!”
The shouts Rosie could hear came from a distance, a distance pounding her head from far away. She tried to call out, but the movements of her head in attempting this manoeuvre just made her feel sick. She felt a soft hand in front of her mouth and tried to open her eyes to see who it was, but even this was an effort to her.
“She’s breathing, just passed out I think.”
Rosie felt two strong arms under her arms pull her upright into a sitting position as she leaned over sideways and vomited.
“It’s okay, Rosie, we’ve got you.” The sound of Jack’s voice made her eternally grateful and she felt herself start to cry as he held his arm around her.
“Should I get a teacher?” she heard someone ask.
“No,” Jack replied, “that’ll only get her into trouble. I’ll stay with her until she feels a bit better. Rach, will you tell Ms Woodfine that I’ve gone home ill please? And Josie, you’re in Rosie’s next class aren’t you? Will you do the same for her please? She’ll be alright.”
“Yeh sure, Jack, no worries”
“You take care of her yeh?”
A consensus of “Yeh” followed this comment, and Rosie heard as the group of people, her friends, went back into the school for afternoon lessons.
She sat there with Jack in silence for a few minutes, she couldn’t bring the energy to her mouth to say anything and Jack just said nothing. He kept his arm around her though, rubbing her back in the circular motion she always used on her father. As she turned away to retch again, she felt Jack’s hands around her face, pulling her hair out of the way of the streams of bile mixed vodka coming from her mouth. Once satisfied she had emptied as much of her stomach that she felt she could at the time she sat back. Jack kept his hands holding her face however, and as she looked up at him, he kissed her. Not a full on kiss, just a firm, but soft, kiss on the mouth. Rosie retracted, “Jack… I…”
“Don’t say anything. Just… stop with the vodka, it’s burnt my lips to kiss you.”
Rosie laughed, always the joker.
“Jack I really…” he cut her off again,
“Rosie, what part of don’t say anything says start talking again? I know everything you’re going to say, it’s what all you girls do, read into things. It was just a kiss, because I wanted to.” Rosie smiled, always the joker, but always the simpleton too. A kiss because he wanted to, that would do her fine.
“But Jack, just so you know. If you do ever feel like you ‘want to’ again. You’re not my type.” She winked at him as she felt her stomach suddenly lurch again, leaving her reeling off sideways once more.
As she sat back again she looked at the ground around her; the unfinished bottle of vodka lay about a foot away from where she sat, her school bag behind her, and the patch of grass where she’d passed out, worn in. She was drawn out of her trance by Jack as he started talking again, “Rosie, I’m worried about you. We all are. You’ve not been yourself for a while now. Yesterday seemed to bring that fact out all too clearly, and today? What are you doing drinking like this? This isn’t you, Rosie, none of this is,” he indicated to the space around her; the bottle, the worn ground, the sick. “What’s going on? Now I have…” he trailed off mid-sentence and as Rosie turned to look at him to see what had stopped him she had her worst fears take hold before her eyes. Following his eye line with hers, his eyes were fixed on a small piece of bandage hanging from the end of her jumper, clearly undone. Kicking herself for being so careless she went to pull down her sleeve but Jack held her arm back. Instead, he extended his arms to hold hers’ and pulled back her jumper sleeve to reveal the badly wound bandage. He did not say anything, and despite Rosie’s best efforts to retract her arm, he unravelled the material from it slowly and carefully. As he let the bloodied material fall to the floor, he studied the wounds on her arm, following them with his eyes. Up and down, left to right, he followed them all. Rosie studied the boy’s face as if a boy she’d never seen hidden in there before was revealing himself.
After what seemed like forever, the boy lifted his eyes from the girls arm and met her eyes. They stared at each other for another minute until the boy moved forward slightly, tilting his head, and met the girl’s lips once more…

10:00 The girl’s eyes opened in awe as she viewed her new home. As the removal men passed her, placing down boxes and boxes of her things, her parents things, she took the opportunity to take a first look at the new pile of bricks she’d be spending the next part of her life in. The house was smaller than the previous, much smaller, but to the girl it was all just a new adventure opening up. She searched every corner of the new place, taking it all in; two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, a living room, and even a small garden out to the back of the house. The girl admired her new room, a sink in one corner; she’d never had that in her old house, and a window that looked out onto the street. As she looked out of her window for the first time, she saw a group of children about her age standing by the removal truck peering in, nosing the new neighbours. One boy looked up to the window, her hideaway, and saw her standing there watching them, spying on them it seemed, and he stuck his tongue out at her. The girl returned the favour doing the same, and he smiled at her. She smiled back at him before she heard her father calling from downstairs, and she left her perch at the window to go and help him. “Yes Dad?” “Can you carry this into the double room for me please, doll?” He handed her a box and she made her way back up the stairs with it. Pushing the door open with her foot she made her way into the room and placed the box onto the floor in the corner. As she placed it down one of the flaps of the box lifted up and allowed her a viewing into the full box. She glimpsed the edge of a photo frame she recognised and, pulling up the other flaps of the box, she came face to face with the picture of her mother and her father on their wedding day, standing on the sand in the middle of a beach, looking eternally and blissfully happy. Moving this picture aside she saw the picture of the three of them on holiday in Spain one year, the picture of her mother as a teenager, in fact every picture she’d ever seen of her mother was contained in these cardboard walls. The girl couldn’t understand why her father had packed away these pictures separate to the other boxes of photos she remembered packing with him and, sliding the holiday picture of the three of them under her sweatshirt, she left the room, being careful to close the flaps of the box back up once more…

Just so I can leave it for a bit.
This bit's also unexciting. But like.. not everything's dramadramadrama in life right? *shrugs*
I'm so with it.

As they walked away from the patch where they were previously sitting, neither of them uttered a word. Rosie, leaning on Jack slightly to help her along, wondered in her head what had just happened. Had she, Rosie, just felt fireworks in her mind as Jack, this Jack, Jack she’d known for 10years, had kissed her? Did Rosie like Jack? These questioned spun around her head at high speed, so much so that she did not hear Jack’s question to her. She felt him stop beside her, causing her to stop too.
“Rosie?”
“What?”
“Were you listening to anything I just said?”
“Um…”
“Where’s your head at? What are you thinking right now?”
“Right now? That I hate it when people ask me what I’m thinking, because at the very moment at which they ask me, I’m thinking about what I’m thinking about and my head just gets all confused.”
Jack smiled, “Never just simple with you is it, Rose?”
“Never.”
“I think we’ll skip your car for today eh? We’ll walk home.”
“No, Jack, don’t be ridiculous, it’ll take forever.”
“And I’m not letting you get behind the wheel of a car in this state.”
“I’m fine now. Really. Threw it all up didn’t I?” Rosie’s joke didn’t bode well, Jack’s reply was suddenly serious,
“Rosie, you’re not driving home. You’ve drunk far too much and despite throwing some of it up, much of the alcohol will still have soaked into your system, reducing your inhibitions and making your reflexes slower.”
“Okay Mr Evans you have my full attention. I, Rosie Griffiths, will not be driving home.”
“It’s not a joke, Rosie.”
“I wasn’t trying to make it one,” she replied defiantly. They walked the long journey home in silence, both caught up in their own thoughts. Both too stubborn to break the, now uncomfortable, silence.
As they reached their road Jack turned to Rosie, forcing her to turn too, “I’m sorry I snapped.”
“I’m sorry I made it into a joke.”
“I really care about you, Rose.”
“I care about you too.” Then, kissing her on the forehead, he turned away and made his way down the road ahead of her, crossing over the road when he came to his house and making his way up the drive way. Rosie watched as he did this, stunned into silence. What just happened? She wondered. Had Jack Evans just kissed her? He was right, she would read into this. She stood confused for a few minutes until a boy coming past her on his bike rang his bell and shook her out of her trance…

10:00 “Hi.” “Hi.” “I’m Jack.” “I’m Rosie.” “Hi.” “You just said that.” “I know. I thought I’d say it again.” “Why?” “Because I wanted to.” “Okay.” “Okay.”…”Do you want to go to the park?” “Sure.” The beginning of the girl and boy’s friendship started with a simple conversation. As the girl sat on the pavement in front of her house the boy approached her and, asking her to the park, slipped his arm in hers to guide her along the way...

“The good things don’t always soften the bad, but vice-versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant.”
“Nobody important? Blimey, that’s amazing. Do you know, in nine hundred years of time and space I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important before.”
“If it’s time to go, remember what you’re leaving. Remember the best. My friends have always been the best of me.”
