... people who self harm for legitimate reasons ...
I don't think there are any legitimate reasons. Self-harm is dysfunctional regardless of why a person does it. I think emotional blackmail is especially immature and pathetic though. It's very sad that these kids (presumably) are being influenced this way.
And the illusion of love is the only promise of defence, and even that will crumble.
I've seen screenshots floating around the 'net. As in, screenshots of the pictures that they've been posting. It's horrible to look at. They really hurt themselves badly. This is exactly why people don't open up to others about their self-harm for help. Because of people doing stuff like this, posting these types of pictures online and screaming "Look what I did because I'm the biggest Justin Bieber fan ever! <3"
I also heard that this was a "joke" started by either 4chan or 9gag. They got the fans convinced that they can show support for Beiber by cutting themselves, and this is what came out of it.

Realistically, most of the posts are fake.
There are so many self harming pictures floating around on tumblr or anywhere else that it's so easy to get hold of them, and post them pretending to be you.

I'm not sure which is worse: People being convinced to harm themselves as "support" for a celebrity, or those people using someone else's pain to pretend that they're doing that...

Well, you'd have to be pretty stupid to cut yourself for "supporting" a celebrity. 90% of the tweets aren't even serious anyway, as in no pictures of self harm.
I'm not judging the people that cut themselves, per se, it's more that I don't think that peer pressure such as this should exist. Whilst this is a legitimate reason to cut yourself, I'm sad that this 'fad' has suddenly hit and that it will be widely honoured by quite a few easily-influenced young people.
The only thing that I have found comforting is that I see about 99% of posts talking about how STUPID this is, rather than actually going along with it.

Peer pressure will always exist though, and anyone who feels like cutting themselves is a legitimate and successful way of getting someone to pay attention to them needs some sort of help and/or reality check.
Yes, it's a bit stupid to think that this will help, but then I think self-harm generally is a bit stupid. I mean, how does it really help a situation? It doesn't. It just adds to your problems, if anything.
Would some people's reactions be any different if it wasn't involving Justin Bieber?
I think because probably 90% of the kids that cut themselves due to this would never normally consider self harm.
Peer pressure exists in schools too around self harm as a "look how tough i am" thing - there was a fad in my old school a whole ago of kids branding themselves with shapes, and the whole salt an ice thing on YouTube etc - but they equally sadden me.
People self harming as a coping mechanism, whilst not ideal, is at least understandable (to me), because its kind of a last resort and people doing it are quite distressed usually, but cutting yourself because someone else tells you to, or coz you think it makes you look cool? I duno. It just sits wrong with me for some reason.
I'd heard about it but due to being at work I didn't get to see much of what was going on. So when I went for a look there wasn't as many images as I thought there would be BUT from stalking the girls who have apparently cut themselves for their worthy cause (HA!) I don't think it's real.
I think it's just some trolls making fake accounts and taking peoples self harm images from Tumblr.
This is just my opinion and of course if girls really ARE doing this then I think they need some sort of help...
So the hashtag 'cut for bieber' is trending on twitter at the moment because he smoked some weed and his fans think that if they cut themselves, he won't smoke weed.
Thought some of you might have some veiws on this.
I personally think that it is horrible and that you have to be many shades of stupid to even contemplate doing something like this. It's basically belittling the very real problem of self harm and is thus obviously not very good as people who self harm for legitimate reasons (ie. not trying to get people to stop smoking weed) will be the ones who get criticised et cetera.
I am terrible at writing what I mean but I hope you get what I am saying.
I totally agree with you .It is not good for the people who are experiencing the real problem of self harm with legitimate reasons.
The fans shouldn't cut just because they think that Biber will stop drinking weed.

Who says what is a real problem or a legitimate reason? Where do you draw the line?
When Take That first split up they had to create special phone helplines to help their fans deal with the shock and pain and whatever else they felt because of it. "Celebrities" have always had a massive impact on their fans.
If this is true then it isn't a fanbase following him its some messed up cult.
I'm certainly not encouraging cannabis use but the general populous need properly educating on how bad it actually is for you. I say this next part in jest, but if people are going to harm themselves over his physical well being then they'd be better served doing it when he's got drunk(i dont know if he drinks or not) as alcohol is a lot worse for you.
It saddens me that kids care so much for these people that they would go to such lengths to 'help them out', when that person doesn't even care for their existance and only cares about their money.

Justin Bieber fans self-harm in 'protest' against his alleged marijuana smoking
The Twitter hashtag was started as a joke but was apparently taken seriously by young fans
The hashtags #cutforbieber and #cuttingforbieber started trending on Twitter after internet message board community 4Chan started spreading the meme as a joke.
