Yeah but it's always going to work like that with people distribution. What if EVERYONE was in the free room and person A had nowhere else to go where people were? It works both ways.
Irene's suggestion certainly seems more appealing. Allowing the converstaions in the current existing rooms to discuss topics that others 'may' feel offended/triggered by but having a completely safe room for those feeling vulnerable. This way you will have less of the "is this allowed to be talked about in here.......... enter long conversation about rules". And more of "oh I find this triggering, will anyone come with me to the safe room".
Would sound a lot easier moderating wise too.

I guess I just figured having 3 or 4 moderately safe rooms and one anything would be more statistically that they'd be someone in the other rooms than 3 or 4 free and one safe, although again, I'm in support of either :)
I'll alert this thread to the rest of the chat mods to see what they think. I'm coming round to some of the ideas posted in here personally but of course all decisions in green land are made as a team, but we will take everybody's opinion and the poll results on board to try and work together with chatters to improve chat. I love how this thread has had such a successful debate and really good suggestions to make chat a better place for it's users. Keep discussing, I'd love to read some more opinions on this.

ok, i will admit that i havnt read all of this. But tehre are a lot of stupid rules in chat an a lot of people that get triggered by a lot of things. Some members tend to whine when certain things are said or spoke about. An extreme i remember of this (an obviously this was at the far end of the scale) but someone was upset that someone else was talking about meat in chat once. they found it highly triggering and asked the member to stop talking about it. and it was a stupid discussion because it was only something like i love steak and im having it for tea. Anyway if there was an anything goes room then that type of thing could be discussed an if somebody didnt like the conversation they could leave the room instead of enforcing the rule that if one member is triggered by something the whole convo has to stop dead which is what seems to happen a lot of the time in chat.
Does that make sense?
oh and i forgot to add. As for needing to go into another room. I was trying to arrange a kinda meeting with 2 people the other day who didnt have msn so i went an took an empty chat room thinking no one will come into a room with just one person in it. An within 3 mins there where 5 people in the room. so its not like you have to wait ages or be scared to go into a room alone. people still come in.

That's almost exactly what I'm refering to. I used a bit more extreme examples of sex/drugs, but even the little things can bother people when they're normal topics and it's quiet annoying having to stop a genuine conversation for the lowest common factor. It'd be better if there was a specific room for those conversations to take place in, and those who dislike it can leave, or as Irene suggested, and room for those who dislike to be safe in.
You catch on quick for someone who didn't read it all, you definitly explained what I was trying to get across.
I remember the person who got triggered by meat, and i remember an arguement breaking out and everyone laughing. Just because it was absolutely ridiculous!
I'm in favour of pretty much everything that's been said thus far. Part of the reason i don't use chat much these days is simply because *everything* is considered triggering, and you often have to watch what you say, which i find frustrating.
The thing is that chat rules do not differ from the site rules/forum rules. So anything that goes on in chat is supposed to abide by the rules posted. Chat does not have its own separate list of rules from the forums or the rest of the site, and we cannot go against the site rules as that would cause inconsistency within the site, and confusion among members.
In all honesty, people have enough difficulty with the rooms as they are now, so how can we really assume that people could follow the rules when there would be a completely safe room and an anything goes room, or whatever alterations are made?
We are discussing this, and I'm trying to come up with some way to make it work. But, in my opinion, an anything goes room wouldn't be happening any time soon. Sorry Colin and whoever else was hoping for that. There's just really the fact that, if the forums don't have an anything goes forum, we really can't have an anything goes room.
I'm still thinking on this, though, to try and figure something out. And the chat mods are discussing these ideas and trying to figure out a way to make them work. But remember, when making these suggestions, that we do have to follow the site's rules.
From what i gather to sum it up in basic terms, the new room people would not be allowed to complain about a subject being triggering unless it specifically went against the rules.
Obviously the rules would still be in place, but the absurd "i find this topic triggering" when its not a something that is commonly triggering, 0could be left out.

That could be a good way to have it work and could work well as a compromise. I'd personally like a room with no rules beyond civil settings, and to Shannon's point of chat having to follow the rules of the site, I'd simply ask why, but maybe that's too radical for the moment :P What you explained could work well for a more moderate position while still implementing needed change.
Also, I again just want to say thank you to the mod staff and members for actually considering and discussing this.

Yes. When I saw a mod for a few years I tried and tired to get an anything goes chat. In the end, it was deemed that the folks of this great community could not handle it and while I hate to say it, I completely agree.
