I was speaking to a mod about some ideas i had for a particular forum and she said something along the lines of: to make a change you need to be able to understand codes and be able to confidently change it. to her knowledge no-one on the modding team was able to do that. maybe she was wrong, but i haven't seen anyone step forward to offer help in coding these changes so all that needs doing is copy&paste etc.

what if Harley and James are the only ones with the knowledge to do this? What if in that respect no-one could be left in charge?

Sorry, really can't be arsed reading anyone's replies - I'm lazy! I can't believe people would even make this an issue. When I had the job I was supposed to, it would take me away from family and friends for extended periods let alone some website which was gratuitously helping people. geez, have some patience and respect!

Mand, there are other people on the site who know how to code. So it may be that someone else could be brought onto the team to do specific stuff.

But none of that matter really, as the idea can't be enforced until Harley returns. When he does i'm sure he'll sort stuff out. But from what I can gather there is a fairly long list. It'll just have to wait.

Have just spoken to James, he is going to see if Harley can get on here tomorrow to start sorting some stuff out. He says they should be back within a month maximum, but will be here occasionally until then.

He also confirmed that harley is busy with work and the whole needs money to be able to afford to take time out to run this place kinda thing, also he is dealing with some personal issues, which of course he couldn't go into detail about.

harley hasn't lost interest and they are not going anywhere. so just as soon as harley can, he'll be back.

Good to know, Mand. But it brings me back to what I said earlier: if he'd just pop in and let us know that that was what was going on it'd be unbelievably appreciated. I totally understand he's got stuff to deal with and had to step away for a bit (haven't we all had to do it?) but it'd be nice to hear it from his mouth.

How about some sympathy? he's obviously working hard and wouldn't stay away longer than he had to. When he's about he is up til all hours sorting this place out. ever thought that he couldn't afford to put time and money into RYL unless he was earning it in the first place??

so leave off, give the guy a break, yes it's annoying when there are things and changes only he can implement, but would you rather he'd shut the site down until he could come back?

This is an appeal for less of the sarcastic posts about him being away. I personally find it not only irritating and disrespectful, but think its a childish waste of time writing these posts because they don't actually achieve anything and they're a waste of forum space.

I completely agree. I know they were 'just' jokes, but that doesn't make it any less disrespectful.

Mandimoo, why do you 'know' so much about Harley? How do you know if he is coming back soon and staying or if he is coming back at all?

Can I just say that no one has anywhere near the amount of power that Harley has on this site, and that can make things extremely problematic. I know typsee has more powers than most people, and other members have other certain "abilities", but they don't compare to what Harley can do. & it's all well and good designating them, but he'd have to be around to show people how to use them, because otherwise one wrong click or entry of code, or whatever, could cause big horrible loop-holes and nasty results. Seriously, just the process of giving people access to other boards on RYL is more complicated than it may sound.

& it's great that there's talk of Harley being back, I still respect him and think he did a hell of a lot for RYL. By no means would I ever say I've ever "slagged him off", but you learn after a while that talk of Harley being back for any considerable amount of time has to be taken well, but not stuck to like glue, because whilst he has the best intentions it still may not happen.

I see it in your eyes

Taken with a grain of salt Rach?

I for one am incredibly frustrated with Harley's extended absence, even if I do understand the reasons behind it. My team has been waiting for 6+ months for some changes to be made that only Harley can do, and it can be really hard to stay dedicated when nothing is being done.

At the same time, I think we should all relax a little. I know people have strong opinions, but it's important to still be polite about it.

Well it breaks my heart to see you this way,
The beauty in life, where's it gone?
And somebody told me you were doing okay,
Somehow I guess they were wrong.

^^ that's what i'm getting at 'it's important to still be polite about it'.
I know 'so much about Harley' because I took the time to ask James and had a really long convo with him about it.

What Rach said is another thing i was trying to get at...but might not have got across... At the mo there is no-one 'on the books' if you like who knows what to do to make changes happen, if they do know they either haven't stepped forward or whatever.

I don't know about the personal circumstances, but maybe harley was called away and hasn't felt able to post about it just yet? We'll know more when he returns.

I really don't get the point of this thread.

All we have established is harley is away..which most knew, and people to be polite about it...which I didn't see a problem with in the first place.

I think the point is...RYL would explode if there wasn't at least one current thread full of bickering.

i dont see why it has to descend into bickering, it was a simple request for users to remain polite when complaining, and to limit the amount of sarcasm and rudeness which could cause offense and pain to the person it was directed at.

i see nothing wrong with that.

I'm sorry, but I have to ask, what is polite about making a thread commanding people to cease a behaviour which very few seem to know about in the first place?
