I don't know the whole situation with that. What seems to really stand out is that the mod in question posted about it on a journal and someone else told you about it. Maybe staff shouldn't post about RYL issues on journals that other RYL members can read, unless it is public knowledge already. I haven't seen lots of people complaining about confidentiality being violated but I have seen people who don't seem entirely clear on the process. Seems that it should be posted somewhere officially, just so no one can claim ignorance, that all complaints and concerns may be shared with other moderators, and complaints about moderators should be taken to head moderators only.

I agree with all of this.

Do be wary of doing this though if you want replies and use your actual email address, even if it isn't the email registered to RYL. Because if you have your name attached to the account it will show up anyway and thus not be anonymous.

Yeah that's what I was thinking of Heidi.

Can't we have an actual anonymous post report system?

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

I would assume that mods would share things, however, I would also assume that they would have the sense and intelligence to use discression when needed, and I am kind of appauled to hear about things that have happened. People make mistakes sure. But ... it seems it has happened one to many times. This make people wary of Pm'ing mods and that shouldn't happen.

You mention that it's happened one too many times... apart from this situation in discussion at present, when else do you think it's happened?

If this is a major problem, obviously it needs to be worked on... But I didn't realise that this situation had arisen apart from now.

I have so spelt a word wrong in that quote, never mind.

I have spoken to at least 2 others who have had things leaked when they shouldnt have been. Even three people, and thats just the ones I know of, is too much.

But then I know there are many other posts which have been reported and everything has gone a-ok.

I could see a potential problem with anonymous post reporting.

Mods are partly chosen on things regarding their post reports (I think? I could be totally wrong) - so if all the post reports were anonymous, then members out of RYL who know the rules well which is evident by their reports wouldn't get noticed so easily.

I think. :/

That is, post reports on the Forums. Chat logs are different, I guess, because the parts of chat logs of rule-breaking that are sent in could identify the reporter somehow, or the person who broke the rules could suss it out by who was in the room at the time of the incident, etc.

Reports about concerns about another mod, I personally would send to typsee/Day Tripper in PM or something first, rather than making a post report where any mod could pick it up.

I think it also depends on how you mean "leaking". I wouldn't call some chat log scenarios where a member can guess which member reported them as leaking, but I certainly would not expect, say, Mod A to tell person A that person B has reported a situation about them and said XYZ, without it being a proper mod investigation thing, more like gossiping.

My brain is going all gooey, but I think I know what I mean.

i don't see the problem with the info being shared with the team, but i would have expected the pm to have been edited to remove personal details and to maintain confidentiality. what i do see as wrong is the other side of the argument being posted somewhere as public as a journal.

in my experience, i have never asked for confidentiality, but the mod has usually pm'd me out of courtesy to let me know it has been posted on the mod board, or the mod i pm the most, she often pm's me asking for more detail and says something along the lines of 'i wonldn't mind getting some other views on this, if you don't mind....'

anonymous post reports are ok, but if more detail is needed then what happens?

i'd say if you didn't know it could be shared amongst the team, and you either didn't want that or you wanted to be kept anonymous, you would usually have the sense to add that to the pm 'just in case'.

Honestly, I never post reported anything before I became a mod. I think, at least, I may be incorrect.

And I never heard anything about things being leaked, but I'm not really a part of any groups. Sure, I've heard since then and I'm very careful not to share things. I think I asked advice from my therapist once about something, but I never told her about RYL.

When you take into account that there are say... 300 post reports a month, and all the other things we deal with, and the fact that people have mentioned maybe five or so cases where something has been leaked, I'd say we're doing pretty well overall. If you say that V3 has only been around for two years, and there have been.... pretend there have been 50 leaked issues (I know, the number is artificially high) we're at a little more than half a percentage point where we leak. Ideally, the number would be at zero. But the website has been around for more than two years, we deal with well more than 300 PRs a month, AND there are other issues. I would put the real percentage point of leaks at about.... less than a tenth of a percent. That's a very small number. And we're human - sometimes mistakes happen.

Honestly, if someone is coming to me with an issue, I pretty much always, I'm sure I haven't once or twice, ask before I share with the rest of the team. It makes me sad when I make mistakes and I can't just rip back some stitches here like I can with my other stuff.

Men come and go, but dust accumulates.

When I was a mod here I don't recall any member confidentiality being broken. I doubt it is any more prevalent now, but I'd only be guessing. I only remember one or two "leaks" and then it was a mod complaining that something she said on the mod board about a member, was repeated to that member, and another case where a mod allowed her boyfriend access to the private mod board. Edit me if I'm sharing too much. Even when complaints were made about personal friends of mods, I never saw or heard of any mod saying who made the complaint to anyone except to other mods when necessary.

When I was a mod, I kept most everything to myself unless I thought someone was in super serious danger or they were causing trouble. People came to me A LOT because I could be trusted. I think members should expect mods to keep things to themselves and use their best judgment.

In the end this place just ****ed me in the ass anyway, but I'd like to think I helped at least one person at some point. I never shared my crap, i was always here for others.

Guys, I've just tested it, and you don't have to enter a real e-mail. I just submitted a message with the name "test" and the email "dontwannatell@no.com" and it didn't have a problem with it.

Well it breaks my heart to see you this way,

[quote=Nymphomania.;1409312]I was just wondering...

If you (as a member of RYL) sent a PM to a moderator, do you expect the issue to be kept confidential or do you expect it to be shared?

Or would it depend on what the content of the PM is? (So... questions about the forum or post-reports is different from raising concerns about a moderator's ability to perform their given function, or something.)

If it WAS being discussed with other mods, should they tell you or not? I mean, it's only fair to know that you/what you've said is being discussed without you even knowing about it, right?

& mods, what is your stance on this?[/quote

keeping in mind that the mods are survivors too like the rest of us i think it should be ok for the mods to share between themselves after all they are a team that run this site.
i think it also depends on what the issue is.

I just remembered, I post reported a mod once & then a few days later i got a post from that mod sending me apologies, which i thought was completely unfair, how dare you put me in that position?

She should never have read it.

The only problem with that though is then you can't receive replies. Generally when I've reported something fairly serious I've received a reply from the mods indicating that they are looking into it or that there's not a lot they can do etc. But yes if replies aren't important then that is a good mechanism of post-reporting anonymously.

You post reported it as in pressed the post-report button?
Problem is, that goes into a shared mod forum, so every mod can see and read and act on the post reports. It's the least private way of tackling an issue.

The mod i reported wasn't a mod at the time if i remember & then she was made a mod again she saw it, i just think a little decorum could of been used.

I mean surely you know who's going to be mods &when they become, deleting it would have been so easy I know there's all this other stuff you have to do, but two seconds.

I didn't like then getting a pm & the mod in question probably didn't like seeing the post report.

Oh god, whenever there's been new mods coming in, we did go through and check there were no discussions on said mod.

It must've been something that just slipped through the net, and for that, I'm sorry.
