i agree i think they should be taking part in the forum instead of just reading other ppls stuff so i agree wth the restriction.

The point of it is - piece of mind for members who regularly use R&V.

If a restriction makes other members more comfortable then so be it.
If a parent/sibling/friend/partner is to join up to try and "track you down" - they wouldn't know about the R&V thread because they wouldn't beable to access it.

So really, a restriction would be a good happy medium for those who want to feel slightly more at ease posting in R&V.

There already IS a restriction. If people want additional peace of mind, they can use their journals. If they want even more peace of mind than that, use a journal off RYL, if they want even more don't keep an online journal at all.

I think we already established that there's a restriction.
But many members would feel R&V would benefit from a resitriction in regards to the amount of posts is necessary to access the board, which i agree with.

I think it's common knowledge that the internet isn't always necessarily private, that doesn't mean members of this community aren't allowed a right to express ideas on what would make them feel safer.

If you don't like the idea, then fine, but making sarcastic rude unnecessary comments isn't exactly adding ideas to the topic.

And I completely disagree. If R&V why not Serious discussion? Or Vets serious? or Self injury? All have things that members may want to keep private, or keep other people from seeing. Should we hide all those forums from new people just in case they registered to investigate someone else?

People need to realize the internet is no private and if they don't want the things they say read, this isn't the best place to post them. I think by adding additional restrictions we are just giving people a false sense of security, and not actually preventing people from reading what they are writing.

Because R&V isn't for support like the other boards are, R&V is a RANT thread, many support threads are just that - for support, rant threads are for members to get things off there chest.

We already KNOW the internet isn't a private place, it's already been stated a hundred times before you even said it, infact, the OP even said it in her post.
We aren't talking about "privacy", we're talking about piece of mind of members to beable to express things without being struck down by massive amounts of paranoia, knowing that older members are the only ones that are able to read what is being said.

I personally don't see why support threads should be any less private than rant threads. The rant threads I've read give away even less personal information than many support threads do.

I also think it's incredibly insulting to the new members of RYL to say "we don't trust you enough to know what we are saying in this forum".

I don't at all. I think it's natural for newer members to be less trusted to begin with, infact, a massive percentage of websites limit newer members in alot more ways than RYL does for there older members piece of mind.
That's why R&V / The picture board/ The meet board are all restricted.

Are you saying The meet board should be visable to all new members? So new members - whoever they might be - can just turn up uninvited to meets and put other members in danger because they have no idea who the hell they are?

Many members use R&V for there own private thoughts and to get things off there chest when it comes to family situations, that they don't feel comfortable talking about in support threads.
If members would prefer a 10-post restriction then so be it.
They aren't asking to win the lottery, they're merely asking for a small restriction to be put on the R&V board.
I've seen some really unnecessary ideas thrown around on RYL in the last few months - this is nothing. And if many members agree to it, i say go for it.

The fact that they give away less information shows just how easy it is for someone to read it, jump to conclusions (that may be wrong) and then act on it. Sometimes what I say on my rants is more of a stream of conscious thoughts; not planned or carefully written or anything so as to prevent things from being ambiguous. Rather than just read to support, people reading may feel they need to act (possibly in a highly detrimental way) or to inform someone of what's been written, which can cause many more problems than just letting things out.

Yes, I know any information I post on here is essentially able to be viewed by the public, however family members already know about the site's existence, which I can't do anything about. I believe it's very easy to be able to scour the site if you know someone in particular is a member here.

What about members who have been here for months and posted 2 times? What about old members who have been here for years and yet no one knows where they live or their name? Just because someone is an older member does not mean they are any more trustworthy than a new member. Thinking that gives people a false sense of security.

As it is now, members could do that. You don't even have to post to see those boards if your account is old enough. Someone could register, never post, see those boards and show up uninvited, and they wouldn't be considered one of the scary new members. Not having it viewable deters predators, not people who already know it's there, like banned members.

It is something, if RYL starts adding more and more "security" features people are going to let the guards down even more, making it even more unsafe.

While we're at it, why don't we make F&D members only? Have you seen some of the polls people answer in there? Talk about private information anyone can see.

Wigeon, is it possible for you to seperate what you're writing? if you're writing more personal stuff, then do it in your journal, but for everything else r&v? As it's already member only, you have to be a member to see it. I imagine if people are going to create accounts to see that, it's not so hard to post 10 times so that that could gain access to r&v IF they know about it. Which if they're reading this.... they obviously do ha! :P

I think that on a support site, despite logically knowing the net isn't a private place in any way shape or form, illogically you expect some level of privacy becasue what you're saying is quite private and personal. There is always the case of making another private account that no one knows anything about you on. If you make another account just for r&v, no one will know.

I think Aidey does have a point there is personal information all over this site. It's not possible or realistic to put restrictions on everything. R&V is already restricted to members only. As Acrasia said, it's not that hard to post lots for an hour gain access to picture and events so would there be much point in adding that restriction to r&v?

Anywho, in my opinion r&v is fine the way it is and the journals are there if you need to write about more personal stuff. Or as someone said, write it in a pen and paper journal or on a computer and password protect it. ^_^

If you're talking in the heat of the moment, it's unlikely you're going to sit and think "Oh, where should i write this?" and weigh up the pro's and con's of every option!

No member is going to know that you have to be here for a singular amount of time, or post a specific amount to view certain threads. So if someone (family/friend) was to look up someone on here, they aren't going to know about the time limits to view specific threads.

Completely agree with what Wigeon has said. I think she has very valid points to a restriction being put on the R&V board.

I don't post in R&V/on the boards at all infact, and i'm old enough to take responsibility for my actions, but then my family respect my privacy and i own my own computer so it's unlikely any family member of mine will look me up on here - even if they did, i wouldn't be bothered.

I do however completely understand peoples points as to why they'd like restrictions on the R&V thread.

Non members can read forum and community questions... so if someone is stalking a particular person without joining, yes, they now know you have to be a member. and they know about r&v. and it's not hard, when you calm down to go and edit a post or delete it or copy and paste it into your journal.

Unless they see this post the R&V thread is very rarely mentioned!
And i barely even looked at the F&C Board when i joined.

The point is people shouldn't have to edit everything they say, that's slightly unrealistic and they may aswell not even write in R&V. The point of R&V is to vent whatever is on your mind without having to go back and edit it every 5 minutes.

You edit your posts because you don't feel confident in what you write and you worry too much about what others think of you/what you're saying.
So.

It comes down to the fact that the internet is not a private place. there are places already established on ryl (journals) where you can have completely private entries. I dont' think r&v needs a post restriction. But if it does get one, I don't really see how it's going to change much either way.

I see you looking Wigeon! What do you think honey?

As i said above, i think we've already established the internet isn't a private place, it doesn't take much to figure that one out really.

Many of the younger members are always on edge when using RYL because of there parents.
Sometimes people want to be heard but aren't necessarily looking for advice, just for others to understand, that's why some people do rant threads so they can recieve hugs knowing that they're actually acknowledged.
You can't have that in private journals.

Restricting it to a certain amount of posts will deter possible family members from finding out what is being said in there son/daughters rant threads, they aren't going to join up then go "Oh, i have to post so many times to view this specific board so i'll go do that first, or sit and wait a few weeks before i can view that thread" - they won't know about it, so they will only technically originally have access to the support boards.

No idea if that made sense but i know it does in my head, and i completely understand what Wigeon is stating.

^^ Put into words much better than mine as to what I'm trying to say.

I was just trying to gather my thoughts as to the points raised about journals and things, and I don't know about anyone else, but I probably could use a journal. I could probably make it private. I could probably write it out at home, or write it and keep it on my computer. Well I do. It's just, and I know I'm going to sound like a whiney attention seeking person here, I need people to read things that are going on in my head. I want to feel like I'm not alone, and that although people might not necessarily know me or understand, they've taken time to read at least some of what I'm saying and in doing that, they care, even a small amount. I guess it's some kind of need to feel wanted.

I use this website to talk to people that know what it's like. If I wanted people from my 'real' world to know certain things, I'd tell them. It's just that having a community here that understands is often a lot more beneficial to display my thoughts to than those that can't understand.

I'm not sure if that makes sense, I'm trying to make sense of things in my own head.

It makes plenty of sense hon :) It's just that even with a restriction r&v is never going to be private. and if people from your 'real' world want to find out, it's not that hard to get past the restriction. It may be that you post a link to your journal in your r&v thing and put the people who regularly read your posts on a buddy list so they can read it still? I dunno. I hope you do figure something out that makes you feel more at ease though :)
