so maybe then what we need to take away from this is that people have different veiws of what constitutes disrespectful... what i was taught, if you respect an organization, that means you respect its leaders, and if you respect the leaders that means you respect (and abide by) their decisions, even when you disagree. other people were taught differently, and that is ok... but that means that what we need to do is ask the mods what their definitions of respect and disrespect are so that we can follow how they feel

and i repeat, i did not say that anyone was a disrespectful person. i said that i thought that behavior was disrespectful. people are not identical to what they do any one time.

And Katie, I don't think anyone is being disrespectful, people just have different views.
What would the point PMing you about it when you were already warned in the thread?Surely that should be warning enough?

It wasnt just about general chat, it was about replying and having conversations in the thread.

Its not about a rule its about misusing a thread, not everything is a straight out rule break. It isnt rash when there have been warnings in the thread and the thread has been closed before? Surely that is indication enough?Maybe not.

Maybe people might learn the lesson better if it affects the whole community, punishing individuals for things like this doesnt seem to work, maybe seeing the effect it has on everyone might make an impact.

I think Jodie genuinely misunderstood the warning (she's a little dozy!), as when I yelled through to her in the bedroom at her for replying to me she was just like "No, that's not what it was about" and I had to try to convince her otherwise.

No other sadness in the world would do

What I've gathered:
Thread is one where you do a short rant randomly.
People turned it into chit chat and used these rants to insult other members, but in a way which bypasses the rules because it's impossible to say who they mean, but the writer and the receiver know, but cannot be proved.
This also causes problems when people are paranoid and take it to be about themselves when it is not. It's impossible without external proof which of these it is.

Mods lock the thread after multiple previous warnings without much notice of how long for.

Mods do not ban the people causing the thread to deteriorate into why it was locked because either:
It was not a banable offence, but ruining the thread.
As mentioned above, there is no proof.

This is the most heart breaking thing I've read all year.

I wouldn't say it was unfair, but there's a problem that can't really be solved.

As stated above, finding bannable reasons is hard in situations like that.

There are so many more possible outlets that could be than one thread, I don't think it matters that much.

It is everywhere. Yes. And these threads clearly make it even easier than usual, as people can just glide over replies and it happens so often people can't even keep up with them.

You have valid points, but I don't think this is the right thread for what you're saying.
I don't see people being disrespectful, people want answers to questions but perhaps aren't going the right way about it.

Also Jenna. Thinking RYL is a democracy. Really.

The number of replies to this thread has doubled while writing this, i'm going to bed.

Even with your cloud brain you speak wise words <3

Also I lol'd at the democracy thing too :3 x

Andy, where would you suggest i put this? like i said originally, i am not at all opposed to moving this to where it would be better suited

i really do need to get to hw now... please, please PM me if you want to talk, if i need to explain better, if you think i was rude, etc. i really just don't want what i was trying to say to get morphed in my absence as stuff usually does on here. cause i know what it would morph into would be bad for everyone, and i really didn't intend it that way.

I kind of see it as something they have to fix, not us. In that they see it happen right infront of them, but don't do anything because it's to them, and they see it as their job to take it. When infact it should be their job to punish them more for doing it.

For example. If i was upset and punched a cop, I'd expect to be arrested for obviously assaulting someone, not the police to stay there and say "it's okay to vent your anger at me, atleast you're not punching a member of the public"

It's a seperate matter, and a community thing in that people reacting angrily at mods. But people don't think about it when they're upset and do it anyway, so i don't see community side things fixing it, only mod side things.

But this discussion should be somewhere else.

Thatll be one of the reasons I quit, because Id rather give up something I love then punish the people who actually deserve it. Lol messed up brain.

That is something I'll take back to the mods I think.x

i am terrible at staying off this site, i really am...

maybe part of the reason it is hard for the mods to punish people is because when they do they get so much backlash from members who aren't involved. being human, that backlash could make them feel hated, not valued, etc, or just be so much of a hassle that it doesn't seem worth it. if that is the case, it is a whole site issue as well as a mod issue, because the mods can't be effective unless the community in general backs them up

I've read it all and i dont see how there was any disrespectful behaviour. Some really nice members asked questions but didnt get answers, then they did and now they get told their behaviour is disrepectful. How? Ok so maybe on a couple of occassions a member kept going on about it but i think thats only because they miss the area that they used to post in a lot, and also because they feel it was very useful to them. Its natural to be a little upset or sad if a thread is closed due to past issues and then issues coming up again. However i don't think this is the place to be having a discussion about it as we are going off of the topic and the purpose of the thread in the first place. Why is it that we have to have so much drama? Why can't people just accept it and agree to disagree?

I'm sorry - I thought the warning applied to general chit chat, not supportive replies. So yes, an extra message/PM telling mewould have been helpful.

Also, the bit Katie said about *having* to respect mods because of the fact they run the site? What it one of them turned into a psycho bitch and was doing horrid things? I think respect has to work both ways.

then there would be reason to disrespect them. but there isn't right now. in fact, by the mods giving so much lenience, they have been showing that they respect the site members a ton

i didn't say (or didn't intend to say) that you have to respect the mods because they run the site. i was saying that if you respect the site (indicating by remaining an active member) that respect would manifest in respect for the mods, and follow down the line. it should follow to all members as well (and if that happened, the mods would have a lot less to do) but i didn't think that that was what was being discussed here.

even taken apart from what would be ideal though, i don't see how aggravating the mods is going to help change their minds. its just going to make them stand their ground more. thats how it works with almost any person. so thats just a practicality issue. you don't get someone to change their mind by saying that they are wrong. that just alienates them from you, when what you need is to be brining them towards you... like say that both parties have a boat, and the boat is their position. if you need to get the other people onto your boat, one crude, rather ineffective way would be to launch cannonballs at theirs until they abandon ship, and then i guess you could sail around and try to pick them up before they drown. at the best, they'd just be your captives. the effective way to get them on your boat is to lay down the arms and get the to willing sail over and board your ship because they want to.

It went for all replies to other people at all.

Why should the mods have to take time out to PM members who dont understand a warning put on a thread? Surely if its unclear then you PM the mod and ask?We assume people are clear on whats been said unless they ask for clarification.

In relation to the thread. I think we've got to the point of which it is:

Lots of members are losing out who want to use the thread legit.
The concept of the thread is not bad, it is the use of the thread which has been bad.
Policing the problems are impossible.
The problems are not just in the thread, but all over ryl, the thread just allowed easy access to do it.
People who want to use the thread legitly do have other methods of doing the same thing.

And all that needs to be discussed is if the lack of policing is worth the benefits.
Which as we can already see the mods think that the impossible policing means the thread should be closed. They've closed the thread and indicated that it will stay this until they change their mind.

If they'll change their mind, is up to them, and no one knows when it'll happen.
Points which havent been previously mentioned to get the mods to change their mind should be welcome, but the points which've been made before are pretty pointless to be made again.
Unless you want something like, power in numbers democracy or something. In which case perhaps a poll would be recommended. But the mods should initiate that if they deem it fit as an idea.

Again I agree with everything you have said Andy and I think its something people should definitely read, wise words.x

^I genuinely didn't think it would apply to supportive replies. So I thought it WAS clear to me... I was wrong but didn't know that at the time! Like, I don't see what the problem is with, 'you can do it, have some hugs' because it's positive and helpful. But I agree the chat is not relevant... it's not about you taking extra time out, I'm just sad that people are having a go at me for making a mistake

She didn't ask for clarification because she wasn't uncertain about what it meant, she was confident in her interpretation, she was just wrong.

It really was a simple misunderstanding in this case and I think because Jodie was the only one to engage in quoting behaviours after the warning she's now really worried about having upset people as it seems like the thread was closed solely because of her, when it was probably more like she just happened to be the final straw.

Aside from the pre-warning stuff, can you see that there was just a legit misunderstanding here and Jodie didn't mean to do anything wrong?

I dont really think Jodie needs you to respond for her, shes doing fine on her own.

No one is having a go at you jodie, this isnt personal unless you were the only person doing it, which you werent.

I not only said in the thread that it wasnt for talking to other people (which encompassed everything.) But I also explained it more detail. Therefore I think if someone was confused or whatever then the ball would be in their court to PM one of us.

Also, is it OK to use the inverse say here thread? Is it OK to have conversations in RVs?
The moderating team will discuss reopening it at a later date.

No.

Yes.

That thread will be closed if it is misused. Please do not do the same to that thread.

Flaming in R/V will be deleted of course. As will other misconduct in R/V.

Sorry, she was being a flid and I thought she'd gone to sleep, hence I quickly replied before the conversation moved on, but then it turns out she couldn't sleep and out-ninja'd me, so now I look silly :P

Thank you for your answers :)
Does having conversations (of a purely banterous or supportive nature, as opposed to any flaming) in RVs count as 'misconduct'?
