Believe me, feeling intensely sensitive about your appearance isn't a joke.
Did i ever say it was a joke? I post pictures to make the thread a little happier and less serious..

Mikes a nice guy/paper clip. He ment no harm even by the ugly butt face cartoons. However, he should be carefull where he post jokes. Some people on these forums are triggered easy.

I remember posting pics of people in a giant meat package covered in fake blood under a discussion about views, campains and beliefs. However someone was triggered by my pic I posted.

And now for a womble!

I, quite frankly, just didn't see the point of Mike's initial post. IMO it just didn't add anything to the thread. Lightening the mood is one thing, but firstly know your audience and secondly at least make it relevant, surely? Or did I just miss the joke?

On the topic of the rest of the thread, I think it's a valid comment to say that when you put something in the media, you're letting it be exposed whatever way it is pulled. The media isn't there to play nice, it's there to sell stories and I think it's important to realise that.

As for the thread - why can't we have serious discussions in General Chat? I'd be very, very sad if GC was full of Rainbow Room type threads - there's a time and place for them, and a few is obviously absolutely fine, but I think a thread like this is sort-of what GC is for; it's not looking for support or advice (hence why it's not in GSA?), it's just posting an experience. GC shouldn't be all spam threads - part of the brilliance of RYL and GC was that there was always a mix of casual chat and more serious (but not serious serious) discussion. General Chat certainly shouldn't be lots of random spamming with random pictures, nor should it always be jokey stuff. It's general chat, which encompasses everything.

Also, FWIW (if I haven't made enough enemies so far!) I think that it's really good to get objective opinions on the things you're experiencing. The fact is that a lot of the stuff that people on here deal with isn't well handled or normal, but it's easy to get wrapped up in this weird RYL bubble of thinking it is. It's never nice but I think it's good to be reminded that this isn't a normal way to function.

i dont see why this threa cant be in general.. from what i can gather, the poster of the threas is not asking for advice or support, meerly asking a question yo the forum.

Also, the thread trolling is not funny, and it will be made to stop. just because it is in general chat does bot mean it is open for people to start 'trolling' in it.

no wonder people despair of this place, its becoming impossible
to even have a conversation.

Also, on the media front, I remember that when I was moderator we used to hold the floodgates back quite a lot with the requests that just weren't appropriate. Harley gets a lot of stuff himself, I'm sure, but it's worth acknowledging that this is a part of the moderator job that is often not widely appreciated!

I agree with this. It's very easy to get wrapped up in some kind of RYL bubble, whether this be trolling or other, more serious topics, such as self-harm. General Chat in an offline environment doesn't just incorporate light-hearted subjects, it often ends in discussions of quite a serious context. General Chat, I think, is a fine place for this thread to be, as long as it doesn't progress into the OP needing support, in which case it should be moved.

To the OP, I think you might be of a sensitive disposition. I am, also, so would probably have find the comment that you quoted offensive but that's my problem, I think. The "laughed and laughed" section was not what I would deem, appropriate however, the last bit said to me that they recognised that they did not understand and that it was hard for them which wasn't mean, just them speaking their mind.

I do believe that if you post something in the public domain, be that via the media or otherwise, you are going to receive criticism, which has already been mentioned in this thread. However, I do also think that, even though this is the case, that doesn't make it right and raising awareness of self-harm etc. can only be a good thing, if done correctly and, if it appears in the public domain for a while, like homosexuality and ethnicity, it will become more widely accepted and talked about and not be in the dark anymore. We've just got to go through a bit of **** to get there.

I think what a lot of people are missing here is when initial contact, etcetera would have been made with the people who were interviewing/publishing the work. After all, there would have been much sweet-talking and pressure around awareness without any form of explaining the realisation. It's easy to get caught up with things - something easily exploited with sales within retail, too. One thing that both sectors have in common are targets and a desire to obtain something with very little input, pressuring is often the quickest and easiest option. After all, with the media industry there would be virtually no come-back for the OP no matter how upset with the final publication; they don't care too much on who they upset.

See thats what I was thinking

Also, Im very pleased to see the thread has gone back on topic.
Im not saying no one should ever go to the media. Perphaps watch what media you go to. Shows like the Montel Williams Show, Larry King, Sanjay Gupta or any non tacky magazines, would be good to do an interview on. I should have known that to do seventeen. Severeal months before my artical was printed they did a story on a murdered girl and blood splatterd all over the page and around her head and the text. They also made fun of Michael Jacksons face. Tacky, Tacky, tacky

There are a lot of copy-cats, as it were, but generally I feel that's because if you look at self-harm in the media then it's often the wrong type of publicity. E.g. "so many people do it", "1 in 12 self-harm", and so on. Rather than focussing on the reasons and/or people stopping. It turns it into a fad.

Hmm, this is something I really struggle with and can't decide where I stand.
On the one hand, had I not known of someone at school who self-harmed, perhaps I would never have started. But on the other hand, I was a very miserable little thing when I started self-harming, and even if I'd never heard of self-harm, I'm sure I would of found something equally dangerous and self-destructive to do. Self-harm has been reported in animals, and many people start self-harming before anyone 'gives them the idea', so it's not as if not having heard of self harm would really stop many people from ending up doing it.

I never really frequented any sorts of sites or heard anything about self-harm on the news or anything in my early days of self-harm; I was just experimenting by myself, and gradually getting worse and worse. However I did stumble across a video on you tube through which I found out about the support group which I have now been attending for nearly 2 years now. So yeah, publicity can also be positive as it helps improve public attitudes towards self-harmers, and can help people to find support and advice.

I'm just rambling here and don't actually know where I stand on the issue, so just offering some thoughts!

I came in here to post this same exact point.

^I agree. Though this thread kind of got a bit serious and heated, I'd say on reflection GC is still the best place for it.

I do want to say something on the drama llamaz point:
I'm kind of sad that people don't think it's possible to have a sensible conversation around here anymore? I really like the range of stuff on GC at the moment; currently some of the top threads are pure randomness, some are funny story sharing (e.g. Em's adult one) some are for serious-ish discussions (e.g. this, the x factor thread, forever alone thread, the appreciation thread for a well-loved member) and some are for advice (e.g. fancy dress, xmas present) etc. I have found GC a great way to meet people, have fun and talk about stuff. If there's a thread that I find silly or that I can't relate to, I just ignore it, and find that there's plenty of things that interest me to keep me going. I'm genuinely sad that other people don't feel that way.

^ I think some people feel that it's just a problem that people are hijacking threads like this with random comments that aren't appropriate to the level of seriousness of the topic. I don't think people want silly or light hearted conversations to go away, but just for people to be able to post serious conversations and not have them turned into ridiculousness, as its a bit disrespectful to intentionally go off on a random tangent when the OP obviously had something to say or they wouldn't have posted a serious topic to discuss. No one wants to start a topic that they find important and then have it detracted from by random irrelevant posts. I think it's more of being appropriate within threads in relation to their topic, not changing types of threads posted in GC. I don't think most people would've had a problem with the posts in question had they been in silly/random type threads. it was where they were, not what they were to me.

As for the topic, its crossed my mind, though not seriously. Simply because I'm a private person and I know that you do open yourself to that kind of public criticism by going public, right or wrong. It'd be great if we could raise awareness without any negative reactions, but that's not what generally happens, especially in controversial topics such as mental illness. When you put your story out there, you're kind of putting a part of your life out there, and you have to be ready for people you've never met to partake in that piece of your life in whatever way they want to. Most people don't want to do that understandably, and I think that's probably why most people shouldn't put their sensitive personal accounts to the media. So it may not be right, but I think it's expected. Also I think if someone were to consider going to the media, it'd be best not to look up publicly posted reactions to your story, as there is bound to be upsetting ones. And I do agree that places should have to be more forthcoming with how they are going to present your story, but in a society like we have currently, the only good way to do that is to get a lawyer and know exactly what you are signing before you sign it. Being naive and trusting places that are trying to make money off your life will only result in hurt, so i think it's best to either not do it or go in very well prepared for the fact that the media is there to make money off you and not to be trusted, and the public is going to make a judgement, good or bad, based on their personal opinions and how its portrayed.

Stereotypes are the epitome of human laziness.

The last article i read on this kinda thing was about a mum who weighed the same as her kid and was happy about it. The article did not highlight the danger of anorexia or anything, in fact most of it was aimed at the woman and how great she felt wearing her kids clothes.

Most people tend to read this kinda thing rather than a story from a recovered anorexic highlighting the dangers and how it can ruin a life.

Same goes with most mental health issues, no one wants to read a recovery story, most just want all the gory details.
