^ Isn't that structure already what happens (to some extent) in the N&D forum? Just without the formality of it.

Yes, sort of. It would be different because 1. debatable topics would stick to a schedule (say, each topic posted every other Monday), 2. the topics would be more varied (so it wouldn't be about rape every other thread..), and 3. there would be a little more formality to it, because the debate threads in N&D are sloppy.

Thanks for the offer, Freedom Fighter. If there is interest I just might take you up on it. :)

I just think making it really formal would put people off, even those who like to take part in the discussions. At least I know it'd put me off. I like the rather loose structure and the fact that things can derail sometimes.

Anyway, I think if enough people want it then it could work, just not to the detriment of the current format.

Personally, I'd rather not have to stick to certain days / times with debates because it takes enough coordination to organise my offline life, without dates, times and 'formality' being applied here too. :P
I'd find it a shame if debate threads couldn't just be left casual like they are now, so that people can add their views whenever they feel like it. Makes it a lot more user friendly I feel.
Maybe there's a debates group with people in person that the OP could get involved in, if there lies such a strong interest.

Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want. What do you want?

Fair enough. I just want more variety on topics. A schedule of debates isn't necessary for that, I suppose. I want to talk about the meaning of life and sh*t, not feminism, rape, and gay marriage.

If there is a topic you'd like to discuss then post a thread on it. If others are interested then they'll reply.

The problem with an organised, formal debate structure is that people can't really come and go like they can with the current format.

I have tried in the past to post threads about other topics but no one wants to discuss anything. It may be the 95% female majority where most of those are LGBTQ who tend to be feminists...

I don't know, I think sometimes the way the topic is framed can make it difficult to reply to, even if it might otherwise be interesting. Sometimes if someone just posts a news article the only response I can think of is "yes, and?" which isn't really conducive to a discussion.

Threads can often get derailed, but I personally think that is fine and healthy. Discussion moves on, and I think it can be better to keep a dialogue going rather than shutting it down simply because it has veered off from the original topic.
