I always give blood at my school, but the nurses in my current harrassed me about my scars [they aren't allowed to ask you about SI in the states]. They usually don't have a problem with me giving as long as I don't have scabs.

"In- in return?" Snape gaped at Dumbledore, and Harry expected him to protest, but after a long moment he said, "Anything."

Apparently I am not allowed to give blood because I see a therapist which they say means that I have severe mental illness and can't make the decision to give blood. Okay...

I couldn't. I have a blood/injury phobia and I'd freak out so much I'd probably have a heart attack and die.
I know it sounds like I'm making up a crappy excuse but it's really bad. When I had a blood test I went into shock and stopped breathing.

My daddy gives platelets. He used to give blood but then decided to 'go up a level' if you like.

I would but I'm anemic and have had lots of other people's blood and major surgery and stuff recently so I can't. Oh well.

I'm going to make sure I give blood as soon as I can, I have to wait until my Daughter is 9 months old though.

I do it - I love it. It's possibly one of the most rewarding fifteen minutes that I know of. Do it if you can, it takes no time at all, it's pain-free, and you're literally potentially saving a life. I went when I thought I was anaemic, and again when I was on iron tablets, and both times they've been fine with me going - they test your blood to make sure it's kosher beforehand, anyway.

And I've fainted three of four times I've been. Great fun :)

Indeedy! It takes five seconds, you only have to do it once, and you're good for life. You won't need your organs when you're dead, but other people will.

I don't give blood because I faint afterwards, which is a total bummer. I donate platelets every two weeks or so instead. :) Also, I get to watch a movie while I do it, last time I got to watch the third Shrek movie, which I hadn't seen before.

oh dear, that's quite embarrassing.
when I went the lady asked how long and I said a couple of months but everything I use is sterile and I don't share blades or anything and she said that's cool. also, she asked me which arm i'd prefer to give from as she'd write it on my record to save me any further embarrassment having to be questioned on it each time >_<

I've tried three times, and my blood count hasn't been high enough each time. They told me to wait a year, book a time to do it and make sure I eat iron-rich foods for about a month before hand, if I really want to do it (which I do). A year's nearly up so I'm gonna start looking for places soon :]

&& then buffy staked edward. the end.

If you look borderline - as one of my friends is - I think that they weigh you to check before you go in. So fairly rigorous - purely for health reasons.

I do hope you're being sarcastic, fainting is horrible :/

I tried to go when I was 18, and was 6 months clean. I ended up arguing with one of the nurses for the best part of 90 minutes, me basically saying that I really wanted to do this despite being scared of needles, and she was arguing I wasn't "mentally stable" enough to give blood. What the **** does my mental stability have to do with my blood?! If they're giving bollocks reasons like that, its no wonder they're short on blood, seeing as they don't want anyone's. I'm pretty sure I'll never be allowed to give blood due to their stupid rules.

Wake me up before I change again
Remind me the story that I won't get insane
Tell me why it's always the same
Explain me the reason why I'm so much in pain.

Well, I was anaemic, I'm not sure if my iron tablets and putting on weight again has helped, so I'll try and go as soon as I can :)
But I did hear that it had to be 6 months after the last time you'd self harmed before you could donate blood. To be fair, they'd probably ask as soon as I got my arms out anyways.
I hope they don't think I'd enjoy it too much! D:

Sounds like you had a horrible experience with the nurses :( Did you complain? I think you should do if you haven't, it's unprofessional and, as you said, with them being so desperate for blood it's bad that they're expressing such a negative message.

And no, I wasn't being sarcastic - I really do quite enjoy fainting. I don't know if it's some remnant of self-harm or anything, but it's just generally quite fun :) Haha.
