age things are generally (under 36months anyway) because of choking hazards, which is not going to happen if you watch your kid and make sure they don't go in the mouth. with having a littley as well as chloe, you can imagine ella was into her 2yrs+ toys by the age of 5months (crawling) and we let her, but exercise caution. split toys into manageable groups, so oyu can check them before play each time and throw away aything worn, bitten through etc. use common sense with the age things as sometimes its for developmental reasons, such as a seated toy/walker/bouncer for babies, stroller type toys for walking tots etc.

shivonie,
every labour is different, even from the account on the last page it sounded nothing like my labour.

i was *forced* to lie down all the way through as i was on wired monitors and the plugs for the machines were like 1m long. i had plenty of gas and air, this is cold, makes your mouth feel dry, and your lips feel rubbery and huge and go a bit numb/tingly, as well as the drunken brain thing going on. i was 4cm with both of mine at first symptom of labour, with chloe it was waters going, with ella it was a show with waters shortly after arrival at hospital. First labours can be under 12hrs, chloe took 11hrs, ella 5hrs from show to birth.

if the contractions are really painful/intense hopefully it means you have a good pain threshold but labour is actually doing its jobs, instead of hours of pains that don't do much. my midwife said, when the pain starts to take 2 paracetamol, when the pain gets too bad/waters break/contractions 4mins apart - lasting 1min/regular pains for more than 6hours to ring in and go in for at least a check.

talk through preferences with your midwife, as she will be able to advise on hospital policy in your birthing unit, also what she would recommend for you personally such as birthing positions, active labour stances to help combat pain (rocking, all fours, dancing etc) and also talk thorugh pain relief options.

if you're going for an epidural my one tip would be get it as soon as you can, mention it when you arrive at hospital and tell them you want it as primary pain relief, otherwise it can be 'too late' to get it - if you suddenly dilate and baby is coming you can't sit still enough for an epi also baby would probably be out before it took effect.

my last tip is, a good pillow to sit on afterwards as sitting down and standing up pull on any stitches you may have, a pillow raises you enough to be able to stand up more easily.

hi all a few pages ago there was talk of slings and suchlike which i missed at the time but would like some advice and to know of your experiences. i have a upright carry on type sling for my little one at the minute but i dont find it very secure feeling and it doesnt have much support for me and i find it makes my back problems worse. have any of you found slings or something similar that you would recommend? especially if you found they helped with/didnt worsen back problems. i had a look at the website for the moby wrap that was mentioned, is it as complicated to put on as the video made it look and for those that have it would you recommend it??

moby wrap all the way!
i have awful lower back and shoulder/rib pains form an old injury and i can carry chloe in the wrap still, it spreads the weight between oyur back shoulders and hips. i find carrying on the back hurts less than the front (i get tired easily, especially when carrying one and pushing the other).

i even went bowling with ella in wrap at 21days old.

at the minute i have a 3 way carrier from mothercare it has sholder straps that cross over at the back and a strap across the middle. Aidens nearly 8 weeks old now and doesnt weigh much more the 10lbs so i wasnt expecting to have difficulty carrying this early but i dont always want to take the buggy out.
i have problems with my lower back and hips from a bad fall from a horse. when i got the carrier it said it spread out the weight but i dont think it does.

shivonie ~ How far overdue are you? I went almost 10 days with my daughter, was tearing down walls lol. I'm convinced cleaning the bathroom/scrubbing bath on all fours kicked her out in the end. Cleaning till 3am~Waters broke 6am next morning hehe.OCD + Nesting instinct!

Su1982 ~ Congratulations on being accepted as adopters, hope your children find you soon xx

shivonie, these last few weeks are hardest really, patience wise at least.I understand your frustration, all the babies in my family were born at about 32~35 weeks and I was almost 42 with my daughter.I wrote a lot of letters for her, made a book of me being pregnant for her to look at/read when she gets older.(She loves looking at scan pictures ect now) attempted knitting but was hopeless... just trying to find distracting things that kept my brain occupied.i would suggest doing all the things you love doing that you can do before baby arrives because you'll have no time at ALL once he/she does.

Things like a bath for more than a few mins become luxeries, but mostkly try and enjoy it as much as possible because cliche as it sounds in my experience how ever bad the pregnancy most people I know miss their bump xxx Huge Hugs xxx and remember youv'e managed 8 and a bit months only a little bit longer till you see your baby and hold him/her for first time :)

thank you I do struggle with waiting. The whole baby thing is a huge issue in my self harm. So I sort of understand what people are saying here, not making much sense here sorry

shivonie, i had chloe at 37 weeks, looking back i knew i was going into labour coz i was so stupidly moody, i chucked my brother's mobile phone over the back fence onto the railway coz he annoyed me!

i was still restless at 3am and had a hot bath. waters broke whilst drying myself.

with ella i had eaten crispy chilli beef from the chinese, if you like it - its not hot hot, but got a bit of a bite to it. say that quicklly!

they always say you can only enhance what the body is already doing, so if you're not ready you won't kickstart anything - its true of inductions too and they won't induce you unless you are 'favourable' because even drugs can't make something happen out of nothing.

nipple tweaking is supposed to be good.
