Well, if it's any help I always say 'in the next week or so' when I interview, just to give myself and the other interviewers some space for thinking if we need it. In reality I generally wait one night so we can all sleep on it, then come to a decision. That doesn't mean the ones we don't take aren't any good - in fact, one of the difficult things about recruiting is having to turn down people who could obviously do the job perfectly well - but there's only one job.
So don't assume you did badly. You're obviously capable or they wouldn't have interviewed you. Unfortunately there was someone who fitted better this time - and that's probably for reasons that don't reflect badly on you at all. Can you ask for feedback so you can improve in future? I know it can be scary to ask to be told about your weaknesses...
There was one job I didn't get although I had more experience in the main 'bit' of the job, because the person who got it had more experience in a smaller 'bit' of the job, and this was an area they wanted to develop. When I asked for feedback they told me that, and also told me how well I'd interviewed, what a great CV I had etc, so when I went for the next interview I had a lot more confidence.
Honestly, if you get to interview then you're a good candidate.
