The wall behind my bed is bright red, and that's the one you see when you walk in. It's quite a small room. The others have arty posters on them. :)

What could look awesome and not oppressive, would be made a Japanese inspired stencil (like the geometric woodcuts used in the amazing papers) and used it to do one wall in black and a base colour of your choice. Then do the rest of the room in the base colour.
