I don't see how the little explanation bit underneath makes it look more untidy. It's all contained within the box. I would say we don't need abbreviations after every title. You pick it up as you go along.

I don't think people are nearly as likely to see them there. Plus there is a very limited amount of text that can go in those descriptions and what if that space is needed for the description and is being used for that cumbersome line?

I agree that there is a lot of text in those boxes, but having abbreviations that are not always used, or even used all that often, seems daft to me. It'll also add more visible clutter to the page.

I personally only ever use abbreviations when talking about the forums, the individual names are too long to type out, and I do use them quite a bit, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Option 3

But then I hate abbreviations with a passion so want them as hidden from view as possible. They just look ewww. And ok I can understand why it is useful for people to know them, but surely knowing the purpose of the forum is more important than knowing the shorthand for it, so description should come before abbreviation.

People pick up things like abbreviations or text slang or whatever else might confuse someone at first. It doesn't mean it always has to be explained in black and white.

But I've said my piece and now I'm going to go and do an essay on earthquakes.

People may pick up on things, but RYL has an ever changing membership, and I don't know how many times people have used an abbreviation in a thread and the someone has come along and posted and said "what does xxx mean?"

There is a while thread going on right now in this forum with a good number of abbreviations that was started because someone didn't know what an abbreviation meant.

I dont think its necessary in my opinion!! I think its kinda obvious (to me) that SD would mean serious discussion. Its hardly going to stand for Veterens General!!!

If the abbreviation 'SD' is used in a sentence and people aren't familiar with the abbreviations of forums they might not even know that 'SD' is a forum at all.

Still hate hate hate them.

Not everyone abbreviates things in the same way, to start with. Some just abbreviate Serious Discussion to Serious, others to SD (I never use that myself). Some abbreviate Events & Meet Ups to E&MU but many do not. I know I never ever abbreviate Self-Injury Discussion to SID, ever. It's just... wrong.

They look messy, untidy, and they're just not needed.
How often to you get people asking you about these abbreviations? Not that often, and most people end up working them out themselves or easily find someone to ask and then it's done, sorted.

Ew ew ew.

Doesn't SID also stand for sudden infant death? Not the best of abbreviations.

But Rach, 1/2 the point is providing a standardized offical abbreviation for people to use so people STOP using 8000 different abbreviations for the same thing.

Heidi, are you thinking of SIDS? There is a chance that forum name is going to be changed any way. GSA can also mean Gay-Straight Alliance, and not General Support and Advice, it's all about context.

Why can't we use different abbreviations?!

Sure, it's simpler if everyone uses the same one, but why should we be restricted? As long as our point gets across, which it 99.9% of the time does, then why's it needed? I don't want to be told that I have to use a certain abbreviation, or that I'm outside of the norm if I'm not using the "standardised" abbreviation.

But, for me, it's about appearance too. It just looks awful.

I never said people can't use different abbreviations, but it's so much nicer and easier if there is some semblance of a standard. The fact of the matter is, there are standard abbreviations that are in use already on RYL. If you don't use them it doesn't mean you aren't normal, it just means you may not be understood as easily.

& I understand that, and if that's the case then I'm not really that fussed, but why does it need to be in the board's title?

Why can't there be a thread somewhere, information in the guide, a page on the main site even?
If it's only a loose thing, then I don't see why it needs to be somewhere so obvious and all that.

& sorry if I ever seem rude, I just completely completely hate this idea! x

There is both a thread and info in the guide and people still ask all the time. People suggested a sticky, but as we all know, hardly anyone ever reads those anyway.

I'm sorry, but I just don't think it's necessary at all. It's not difficult to figure out the abbreviations, and most of the time the only ones I see and F&CQ, F&D and R&V. I'd never really abbreviate any of the others. If someone needs to ask, it's not that much hassle.

I just think it's untidy and a bit daft really. Sorry
