Brum has some good food markets too! The meat anf sish and veg markets are excellent. Theres lots of jamaican fishy stalls where you can buy parrot fish and all manner if wierd and wonderful things. Also regular farmers markets too.
rag Market is ace for second hand goodies and things and if you are into fabrics and such theres excellent fabric stalls and shops (mostly asian aladins caves of cloth).
Theres a brilliant Chinese Hypermarket too called Wing Yip. all your asian needs really cheap. Steamers and woks and well its just an experience walking around. :)

If that's the place I'm thinking off, it has a restaurant attached which does the YUMMIEST food ever.
If it's not, well, then just listen to Matthew

Hey! I'm a fellow Scot and my boyfriend stays down south as well. He's and Aston Uni and he really likes it. Also spent some time near London and I definately prefer Birmingham. Felt less out of place there for being Scottish. It's a really nice city I think. Wish you the best of luck! :)

I'm moving to birmingham in feb so good to read some positive things on this thread! I've been a bit scared, i have never really spent any time there but actually sounds like a cool place, and i'm soo pleased to hear it has decent shops! x

hi, i live in B'ham, it will take a while to get used to, learning where not to go alone and such like is a big thing. Its good though, plenty of nightlife, loads of shops and always a big mug of tea from me to anyone who needs it.
Its like a city girl moving to the country, you get used to it, its just different.
Pm or e-mail me if you need any particulars.
good luck
