1. Yup yard waste sounds like your garden waste. Fwiw, I typically assume when people use the word garden there they're meaning a yard. So grass clippings, branches, leaves, etc..

2. I don't own an iron but I do own a kettle. If it broke I guess I'd be very very sad, order a new one, and just throw it in my normal garbage?

As far as I know here, normal humans can't just drive up to the dump, typically referred to as Mount [Company Name], or the recycling place because it is for trucks only. But I've also never tried. I did a google for my city and it looks like there are some drop off locations for recycling, and some random organizations you can contact for textile donations and house things, but nothing that appears to do recycling if they are not in good condition.

Also interestingly, have now learned that recycling goes to the "Materials Recovery Facility" which is definitely an unexpected name.

The tip!

Although I'm pretty sure that my parents call it the dump and that I therefore must have called it that at one point and 'tip' is something I've picked up at some point in my adult life!

* I didn't put kettle here, because apparently you don't routinely own kettles in the US???

*shrug* You just have to always put moar lesbians whether or not it makes sense!

So can you personally drive to the dump or the recycle 'center' to dispose of things, or is that only for the trucks to go? I would also like to ask you question 2 from above!
If you live farther from the city you have to drive to the dump. If you live in a town or just outside of town garbage trucks will come pick up your trash. Same for the recycling. If you really wanted to you could drive to the dump but I never do because there's no reason because the trucks pick it up.

I don't think recycling would take an iron or kettle. They are very picky on what they will take. Usually they will only take paper and plastic products. They won't even take electronics. So unfortunately a lot goes in the trash. There is an insane amount of waste in the US including tons of litter. I would say close to half don't recycle which I find sad. We are kind of a gross wasteful country.

Also most of us don't have irons either lol. The older generation is more likely to own such things. For example, my mom has an iron and a kettle but I don't have either.

Forget the risk and take the fall if it's what you want it's worth it all

So I kept getting irate about this because how will anyone know if you mean an actual skip that you've hired outside of your house or the dump? Then I was like "bloody English calling things that are different the same thing" but my dad says he thinks calling it the skip is also a thing where we come from in Northern Ireland so that's the end of that.

Well I've got some electrical waste so there's one of our outings sorted for when you visit. You can mpg the whole experience to send to Camden.

Oh! How do you iron your clothes??? Also, you're not even allowed to throw electrical stuff in the normal bin here!!

I got really interested here as this sounds so strange to me so I did some light research. As far as I can tell, every house in the UK gets its household waste and at least some recycling collected. I googled the most remote place in the UK (Foula- an island with a population of 33) and it has waste collections (on a Friday, if anyone is interested!). These guys aren't connected to the national grid for electricity and are on a different calendar to us, but they still have household waste collection. Us Brits really value our bin collections I guess...

I also extend my question about ironing to you! My Prior American Knowledge suggests that you deal with not having a kettle by heating pasta/rice water in the pan and making tea/coffee in the microwave?

I don't have any clothes that need ironing. The only humans I know with irons are old.

I don't cook but I cannot imagine anyone making tea/coffee in the microwave. That sounds horrible. Most human I know have coffee makers at home or tea kettles or both. When I used to make coffee at home I had a french press, so I heated the water in my tea kettle then poured it into the french press.

Also I think technically there are some things you are not allowed to throw away (thinking like specific types of batteries or paint) but usually a google will tell you a place you can take it to. I have the feeling most people just don't listen and throw stuff away with normal garbage.

When I've had old laptops or electronics I've always been able to recycle them through apple. They just mail you a box and label and you send it to them.

I've also never heard of even remote places having to drive their garbage to the dump themselves. Typically if you live that remote, you'd just burn it in my experience.

Context basically.

If I say "I am going to hire a skip"- I'm getting a skip delivered to my house.

If I say "I'm going to the skip"- I am travelling to the dump.

I have been discussing this with friends and it turns out it is a very local phrase to where I live. So it must be regional.

For me it’s

Tip: place where people go to legitimately dispose of waste
Dump: place where people go to illegitimately dispose of/hide/dump their waste

But I don’t know if that’s a me thing.

So I told K (my fiancée) about this and she dramatically declared she couldn't possibly live somewhere where you didn't have clothes that needed ironing :P I also love ironing and iron things like pyjamas so I'm with her on that.

Also it feels like every time we speak you drop another American bombshell - I had to google both "tea kettle" and "french press". I don't know if we have tea kettles at all, and we call a french press a cafetière.

We have what the Americans call tea kettles they're often sold as whistling kettle or hob kettle. Mostly used for caravan or camping holidays or by people who have an aga. Most people I know use electric kettles in the UK.

I am not a spammer I swear. Just trying to show. What would you all call that?

Most people I know have electric kettles. Very few have the kind you put on the oven stove thingy. That again seems to be an only old humans thing here.

That article is from 2015, so is six years old. That might be the issue. Most humans I know (including me) have electric kettles if they have one. Like I said, the only humans I know with the ones it is describing on the oven stove thingy are old. I will say it's probably less common to have a tea kettle here in general though and more common to have a coffee maker.

Look at the spout! it’s like a teapot and a kettle all in one!

Do you put tea leaves/bags in the actual kettle bit?

I wouldn't put tea in the actual kettle as I would think that would flavor all future tea lol. I also don't make full pots of tea. I only ever make one cup of tea at a time, so I put my tea bag in the individual cup.
