Jack, what on earth are you doing living in a primitive part of the world where you can't get such basics as Jaffa cakes, marmite, chocolate Hobnobs and, in the right restaurant at this time of year, roast grouse ... You're going to have to emigrate.

To develop this worthwhile thread, a small competition to decide who here has eaten the most exotic, unusual and delicious thing in their entire lives. Mere expense doesn't necessarily count, however much it may in the real world!

My entry will be for snipe, roasted on a very hot barbecue some years ago. Don't ask where they came from but, like all game which is best roasted quickly, they were absolutely delicious and no one there had ever eaten them before, including me. Highly unusual and wonderfully good ...

Tony.

Never surrender.

I'm glad I can't get Mcvities here - just something else to have to wrestle against eating.

Most exotic thing I'v eaten is octopuss (in a Greek restautrant). Some day I'll try Haggis but I have to get through the McVities first - Jaffa Cakes are up next

Remember when they brought out the little ones? The mini's in the tubs? I used to take those with me as a weekly treat for lunch breaks. I'd get everyone trying to rob my Jaffa Cakes! :O

I remember one girl would bring a box in and would eat one, and share all the others with the popular girls in class so she could be popular too. Was sad really... She must not have loved Jaffa Cakes that much. :P

I wouldn't worry too much about haggis, Jack. In my personal view it's not much different to sausage - no offence intended to our Scottish members.

However, in Oman, years ago I remember we had a day or two of heavy rain shortly after the present Sultan, Qabous, took over from his father in an almost bloodless coup. The Omanis reckoned that this was a good sign from Allah. The quail also decided that this was a good thing and migrated down the Gulf despite their tiny wingspan and high wing loading - something I still find astonishing. I regret to report that we then had a share of them and, as served up by our Indian cooks, they were out of this world (just don't think about the kitchen hygiene). And I recently ate quail in a Suffolk restaurant - also delicious ans something I intend to follow up.

Harley recently queried the availability of beef from proper highland cattle in this part of Scotland. The message I got today was that one would have to buy an eighth of an entire carcase for several hundred pounds - so no go for the moment at least. I have heard that significant numbers of highland cattle are being bought by Germans as decorations/pets on their farms over there. But I've still never tried the beef ...

Tony.

Never surrender.

I ordered Jaffa Cakes yesterday. 150g size for 4.39 USD or 2.7785 GBP. That includes shipping from UK. Not bad.

We have quite a few farms here that sell beef the same way. They also raise "Heritage Turkeys" (Thanksgiving) and hogs (lots of pig roasts for West Point football games but I've never been a big fan of cooking and eating in parking lots). We have a llama farm to but they are not for eating.

We have a regular TV program here that shows how they make different things. One episode was about haggis and it did make haggis seem less esoteric more like a common sausage

Interesting - I had to look up Pims and it seems they advertise as "biscuits" compared to Mcvities "cakes" - which I read had VAT tax implications since cakes don't get taxed and biscuits do. One way to discern difference is that cakes get harder over time and biscuits get softer. With that criteria, I think I know a lot of people who are turning into biscuits as they get older

I've never seen pims before. Where did you get them?

Has your Jaffa cakes arrived? It makes me sad that you can't get them at your local shop. Oh the things we take for granted!

I only ordered last week and the Hobnobs took about three weeks to arrive. I probably should have waited to buy. We are having a heat wave now and chocolate will melt. Instead of "Jaffa cakes" I'll get "BlaBla Cakes".

They didn't cost much and I don't mind the wait. Its fun to get packages from overseas with all kinds of stamps stuck to them lol

They will be worth the wait.

Some shops here have started selling American snacks. We only get plain or peanut m&ms. I managed to try peanut butter m&ms a while ago. Yum! There was also Hershey's chocolate, which I haven't tried. I can't remember what else there was, except from a foamy spread that looks like marshmallows.

Pim's can be found in some supermarkets import foods area, personally I prefer them over Jaffa cakes as the sponges can be quite dry.

They were.

They were a bit worse for the wear from summer heat but they were tasty just the same. They were a bit smaller than I expected. I could have eaten one with a single gulp if I wanted to go porky style.

I could go for more but I'm going to roll the dice on another McVities offering. Decisions decisions...

Glad you enjoyed them. I really want one now!
I recommend fig rolls or penguins (penguin the biscuit, not an actual penguin).

Normally I would try the fig bits but I'm pretty sure they are like items we have here. I'm leaning toward the buttery swagger of Boasters!
