isn't it weird though how it's so warm there right now? it makes me sad when i think about that most decisions regarding the location of olympics/world cups are only based on where the money is coming from. i mean there are so many places in the world that actually have snow right now and still they chose Sochi.
Other than snow you also need stadiums and other locations and enough space to accommodate athletes and their teams, journalists, the press in general as well as all the visitors. All the snow in the world would not be of any use if the infra-structure and such were faulty.

From what I've read, Putin hoped to elevate Sochi to a major "post Olympic" tourist location. Fair to say millions of people who never heard of Sochi know a lot more about it now. Aside from bad snow, a broken ring at opening and a hockey loss it seems to be a good event all around so far. All the horror stories about terrorists, brown water, feral dogs etc seem a bit overcooked at the moment.

Which is a great idea but it is also in his/the country's best interest. It is all about money, that's why they chose Sochi and that's why they chose Qatar for the World Cup which is the stupidest idea ever thought of.
And yeah I also think it was so overdone by the media regarding all the horror stories.
God no! :P
I think my parents used to do cross-country skiing when they were younger, but never competed. My family lived in a very rural area where most people were either farmers or did some admin jobs for the kolkhoz i.e. they didn't really have any access to training opportunities etc.
I pretty much suck at all sports, I can barely stand and not fall over on skis or ice skates. I've got the coordination of ... something that really doesn't have any.

Ah well back in the day I think people had to cross ski or snowshoe to get around. In my general location a lot of older Germans ran ski areas and lodges in the highlands and mountains. The Hudson River here looks like the Rhine

That's very interesting!
I live close enough to the Rhine to have seen it numerous times. Not sure I know what it looks in winter though.

Canada are my 2nd choice so... i'm kinda with you there lol
currently watching the women's gold medal match, routing for canada in that one. can't wait for tomorrow, really hope finland's men's team can beat sweden!
It's really hard to tell either way, Sweden is a hard team to beat.
I really hope Canada will win against the US, still not amused about yesterday's game and barely winning against a team that they should've beaten quite easily.
This is one of the best ice hockey games I've ever seen, it is easy to see that they are on a whole different level of playing than some of the other teams. The US is making a pretty poor show though of making use of power plays.

I kept hearing predictions of a high scoring game. Right now it seems like a soccer game with all the back and forth and no scoring
