Giving someone a leaflet is not really shoving it down their throats, especially when accompanied by a box of gifts. The leaflet will be put aside, if they can even read, they might be interested...but more likely more interested with the toys and sweets.

Is it so bad that there are religious connotations to giving? It's not like the money is conditional on converting or they get religion shoved down their throats.

In 2010 Christian Aid raised £95 million and in 2009 Muslim Aid raised £44 million. Would you rather people didn't donate money? It's not enough to suggest that money is donated to non-religious charities; often the money is donated as part of their faith.

Operation Christmas Child is a great organisation that are just trying to bring a little big of joy into the lives of children living in poverty. Is it so bad that, sometimes, there is a religious leaflet thrown in?

I'd be more uncomfortable if the kids had to listen to a sermon first.

But, most charities have an agenda. If you want to use a charity, you have to understand that they have a purpose. Yes, they're doing good, but... They have a message.

I'm an athiest but always do at least 5 or 6 shoeboxes for OCC. I don't feel that the organisation is forcing Christianity onto the children - just giving them the option if they would like to learn more.

We used to put together boxes of stuff for children to send to Africa when I was in high school, it was never anything to do with religion though. I loved doing it knowing how happy a child who had nothing would be just to get something, now I just donate money when I can afford it.
