I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!

Who else is fine?!?!?

That's how they justify using more meds. The whole internal logic of the DSM is a movement toward describing things in such a way that they become more clinical seeming and more med worthy. They even tried making losing your patience in traffic a disorder that 17 million people had - and they said medication could fix the problem. Its a disgrace really.

It would seem not. I'm sub threshold kind of thing.
Due to lack of 'life threatening' trauma [although I nearly died at birth, hurrumph] or sexual abuse.
You know the NHS!

I have 'classic' C-PTSD [a whole bunch of the stuff from growing up in a very dictatorial and isolated family, witnessing domestic violence, unable to escape from a decade of daily bullying at school, all this on top of lack of early secure attachment, nearly dying et al] and that's what my therapist seems to be working in mind of, along with the attachment troubles which are Borderline-ish.

I get the rest but you can't form memories that young, so I don't get how nearly dying at birth can cause you to have psychological problems? Unless it affected the blood supply to your brain.

If I remember correctly, you can't form narrative memories at that age, but I think you can form more sensory memories, I may be wrong, but that's what I believe anyway. Like having body memories and stuff.

It may have done as I nearly stopped breathing, was in severe distress, and they had to yank me out with forceps pronto [my Mum's waters had already broken a day or so before]. But it was traumatic for my parents, especially my Mum, and then the separation from her for several weeks [no touch, anything, she only saw me through a glass wall] definitely had a long term effect. Fact. Not of the PTSD variety though. Effects on baby of mother with PND/PTSD and all that, effects attachment a heck of a lot.
I'm not going to get into a debate about body memories, as I know not everyone holds by them. I do, some don't, and that's ok.
It is well documented that premature birth is a real trauma for both Mum [and Dad] and baby. Sadly they didn't know much about any of that in 1970.

I read that psychoticism is being considered as a PD trait but I'm not totally sure. Maybe I will not have 'psychosis' anymore.

I think writing your own DSM is a good idea, though I think the people who write the DSM make up their own words also. I think some of the new labels were on QI a while back.

There are actually a lot of studies that suggest a difficult birth can result in mh problems. I guess it's the same theory that MH problems are chemical imbalences. X

Jenna - in psychiatry trauma is more about how it effects the person rather than the trauma it's self.
For example some people get raped but don't have PTSD or any MH or personality issues. Yet some do.

Also it was a study I read that suggested turbulent upbringing could be a long term form of trauma for some people.
To be honest the whole thing is just a name for a load of symptoms like Jodie said. I guess it doesn't really matter what it's called x

Oh my days an RYL DSM has to happen.

Jenna, care to take the floor and outline BPD problems ;-p

I reckon for PTSD:
So life pwned you, now as your brain, I'm going to pwn you in an attempt to cope with the life pwning. Logical, right?

Borderline - spending life on the edge, never knowing quite when you're going to fall off. Or whether someone pushed you or you pushed yourself. Or you pushed someone else.
