What is the origin of pancake day?

I have a visual impairment / neurological problems so I need people to type in clear text and no funny fonts. Also excuse any typos, my vision blocks things out.

Origin of pancake day is that it is the day before lent, therefore all the food people weren't allowed during lent had to be used up. And this resulted in making something similar to pancakes. (probably more literal pan - cakes instead of what we know as pancakes)

I had pancakes on Friday night at a fundraiser dinner. Had nine of 'em, which isn't my record but I was very full when we left, haha.

Hopefully I still like pancakes on Tuesday.
