I used to love pro wrestling years ago. From say 1998-2003 I loved the WWF/E and liked WCW too. As far as UFC 9 goes, I'm sure I remember Gary Goodridge vs. Paul Hurrera (sp?) from that card. Crazy finish to a fight.

I've decided that if my health isn't too bad by the summer, I might have a go at BJJ. There's a gym in Dublin that offers a 6-week beginner's course for a pretty decent price, so it'd be a good opportunity to find out if I like it without having to make a long-term (or high-cost) commitment.

Also on the MMA schedule this week (for me anyway): The Ultimate Ultimate 1996 (aka UFC 11.5). I'll catch up with modern UFC one of these days... though at the rate I'm going, it'll take me a few months.

I don't either really. I've got his book (very good read), he says it symbolises how the sword was put up against his throat during hard times and he managed to overcome them. I can't wait for this fight though, really looking forward to tomorrow night! Me and a group of friends watch pretty much every UFC live, from like 2-5 or 3-6am, well worth the tiredness!

I've seen a fair few of the early UFC's but the earliest one I own on DVD is UFC 40. I'd recommend going from like say UFC 30 onwards. There's so many great events. I hope for yourself that you will be able to feel like your health is stable enough to train BJJ or whatever you'd like to do in the summer, you'd have great fun.

A little under two hours to go (unless you're watching the prelims, which I'm not). I can't wait. This'll be the first time I've ever watched a live UFC.

That fight was a lot shorter than I expected... and I saw almost none of it. I watched it online, and my internet connection deteriorated at the worst possible time. From Brock's entrance to just before the finish, I saw the fight as a series of about 12 still pictures with stop-start commentary.

I'm sorry to see Brock lose though, especially so quickly. I was rooting for him.

...

Holy crap, I was just about to click on "Post Quick Reply" when he announced his retirement. Not sure what to say... except that I'm hoping to see a return to WWE. He had a bit of a Twitter feud with Steve Austin recently, and a possible match between them (maybe at WrestleMania 29 next year) has been rumoured for a while now.

Phan/Hettes and Diaz/Cerrone were great fights by the way.

I dunno, I'm really enjoying watching all the early UFCs. It's interesting to watch the rules take shape over time. I'm up to UFC 12 at the moment and already it's barely recognisable - it now has time limits, weight divisions (albeit only two), disqualifications and judges. UFC 1 had none of those things. Even if most of the early fights are sloppy (since most of the fighters don't really have a feel for MMA yet), watching the sport develop is fascinating.

Super late with the comment, but Brock was never going to be the same after the illness and surgery.... Shame he went out on a loss, I hope he's remembered for his better days.

It'd be great to see him in a WWE ring again, I hadn't heard those rumours. From what I know, he pissed a lot of people off when he left, but he'd be a massive draw and I can't see WWE passing up a big money opportunity. Maybe a year at home will give Brock itchy feet.... :D

Also, Fifteen Dollar Eagle, I know what you mean - I've never watched the earlier UFCs myself, but watching it take shape would be pretty interesting. The promotion has evolved so much since it started up...

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level & beat you with experience

Overeem is no joke, but I was still surprised at how Lesnar lost. Hell, I'm surprised that the Reem is fighting in the UFC at all.
BJJ is a great sport and it's worth the try. I'm trying to psych myself up to return, but it's been a while and I'm fat, out of shape, and not at all motivated... It will take lots of juggling during the year if I do go back to the mats.

I think McMahon has gotten over Brock leaving - he was included in WWE '12 as an unlockable Legend (impressive, considering his entire pro wrestling career lasted all of two years) and his name is occasionally mentioned when the commentators talk about "all the greats who have held the WWE Championship over the years" (they went out of their way to never speak of him for years). Plus, he would rake in a lot of cash for the company, if they could find him a worthy opponent and build him up as the unstoppable monster he once was.

A few days ago, Goldberg tweeted that he'd be willing to face him at WM29, but it's hard to say how big a draw that would be - they both had their last match against each other at WM20 and they made no effort at all (which left a worse impression on the fans than their departure).

Ultimately it's all about the money. Brock never had much love for pro wrestling, he was just in it for a hefty paycheck, so it depends on whether or not WWE is willing to offer enough to lure him back into the ring.

This was a long, very off-topic post, so I'll make up for it by saying I'm looking forward to UFC 142. I'm not that interested in the main event, but I'm looking forward to seeing if Vitor Belfort is still as good as he was in the early UFCs.

I hope Goldberg stubs his little toe against a door. He's an embarassment at everything he does. Brock isn't a bad guy, but I'm not sad to see him go either. Now Belfort I do not like. He is a fake person.
