Lol!! Thank you guys so much! It was such a pleasure to log in here this morning and read this. *hugs* I lurked around here for a long time before I joined, and seeing the community here is the reason I finally sucked it up and built an actual account. I'm sure that most of the issue is just me projecting my own upset and disjointed thinking onto things here; I slept a bit last night, and when I came back here, I felt a little embarrassed in advance for what I said yesterday... It was a relief to come here and see everyone making jokes about it. :D

Anyway, thanks again.
And here:

Now hey i dont see very well especially with pictures but even i can see thats a gorgeous big TASTY looking cake!

i see your gonna be VERY popular!

Dont feel bad about what you said. Its ok to say what you think here and sometimes we also get things wrong, we have a bad day or whatever or say things in slightly the wrong way, or change how we feel, or other things understandably effect us, or we just need to let off steam [how many times have i done all of this on here and had to apologise time and time again - answers on a postcard please!].

i just think its great youve come back and are willing to still try and see if this can help you!Thats great and im so glad to see you online.

Oh and we often have jokes on here - and sometimes it even lightens the place up a bit!But just so you know im sure the jokes werent meant at you in a cruel way or to be at your expense [as i think/hope you know anyway.]Rather we would rather laugh with you than at you or what you say like we are now and i can already see you have a great sense of humour so your gonna fit in just fine!

Again if you ever need anything, a friend or even just a light hearted chat feel free to contact me!Youd always be welcome.Anyone is.

Take care and best wishes and so glad you came back!

Don't worry about making mistakes, I find myself making mistakes in conversation (I have HFA, makes it hard to read conversations, especially online ones) and most people here have been very nice about it.

Now, what was I going to say... =/

Oh yeah! I hardly posted when I first started on RYL. But now I'm a regular in a few spots. I tend to pick and choose where I go. I haven't really found there to be any "etiquette" to speak of, other than what people have already said. And I, like you, lurked for a while before finally joining :) I love it here though, it's my second home. <33

If someone ever says to you "You need to stop thinking so much," call them ignorant in your head and keep thinking deeper. It is this mentality that breeds stupidity and sheeple. Your mind is the most important tool you have. If you stop using it, it will atrophy.

Question everything.

Personally I've always felt it was etiquette to maintain a respectable ratio of asking for/giving support and advice. I definitely don't think that someone in crisis should feel bad posting because they haven't been able to give advice lately, or that members should be afraid to post threads. But I do think that over time there should be some balance. If everyone posted threads asking for advice, and no one gave advice this site wouldn't work. I think most members do a good job with this, but it's something I've always felt was an unwritten rule.

With that cake, you sure have a place here now ;) That's worth a week of mod bribes!

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but the original post got me thinking about what these unwritten rules might be. And while I agree that they're best left unwritten - we do have enough rules, don't we ever - I'd find it interesting to hear people's views on it.

Erm, that's not to say I'm out to start a long discussion (again!) but maybe something for the e-zine? The community team? Just something like random members' thoughts on what RYL means to them, what the important things are, stuff like that.

^^ I think that would be really interesting. There quite a few unwritten rules I think, but as they are unwritten, I'm sure people have all different ideas of what they are based on their experiences here.

And welcome Heartless, as others have said, you are far on your way to becoming very well liked here, bringing cake and all :P

Thanks, guys. :D Anyone who ever needs/wants someone to talk to is welcome to drop me a line. I'm not online very often, or for very long at a stretch, but I love to talk. I'll cheerfully be friends with anyone.

Cookies are a thing of mine, but before I even open anything else in the kitchen we're going to have to eat our way to the bottom of the pile of food that's accumulated here in the last three days. <3 Food is the sincerest of all gifts, I think; after all, it says "I'm interested in your continued health" in a way nothing else can quite match. The beautiful and rather touching display of solidarity over the last three days has not only affirmed how really great my mom was, it's led us to only half-joking discussions on whether we should try to rent an extra refrigerator from the Rent-a-Center for a week or two. Can I interest anyone in a piece of pie? Barbecued pork chop, perhaps? ;)

I don't think you're off topic. In fact, I think you've hit on what I was only trying to. :) Etiquette is basically a prevailing sense of what's "appropriate," so I think a conversation where everyone could weigh in would be insightful. It would tell the spirit of this place, that's for sure.

I agree. I find that I help people a lot in some periods and some periods (like right now) I can only respond to a few help boards at a time because it's a big triggering in rough times like right now.

Wasn't there an article kicking about somewhere ages ago along the lines of 'Getting the most of the RYL'?

I wish you the best of luck settling into RYL. As Aimee said, treat others as you would wish to be treated. Be aware that text based communication has its drawbacks and that messages are not always meant exactly as they seem. Refrain from being nasty and realise that everyone here is on the same side, lend support to others when you see they need a hand or when you feel you have something to suggest.

You'll get on great I'm sure - the fact you have come to ask about this shows you are well on the right track :)

its awesome that you searched for even forum etiquette XD those kinda things are what you pick up.

my failings on most forums i go to is venting. i get mad at mods or people who grass me up to mods, and then they have a go at me and i get madder, and then get myself banned. i tried not to here, but i had a little problem with first aid (conflicting attitudes to first aid; i thought they were worst case scenario over cautious and only ever refered to crazy drastic injuries, and they thought i was a bitch who didnt know jack **** about first aid. lol. hopefully we were both wrong haha)

anyway, im rambling. i was gonna say, its mostly warm and lovely, but theres a lot of different people, so youll find a person or group that you clash with. some people are mean. im mean, but i try not to be XD

So if you wanna burn yourself remember that
I love you

And if you wanna cut yourself remember that
I love you

And if you wanna kill yourself remember that
I love you

EpicFailGirl, bless your heart! I'm not afraid of mean people; I understand meanness of most kinds, and it doesn't make much of an impression on me anymore.

As for the article about getting the most out of the site, I think that's under the general articles; I poked around for it, thinking I would post the link here, but didn't find it. I do remember reading it, though; there was a rule of thumb there about how ideally everyone would post in support of others five or so times for each time they asked something for themselves. I came across that little tidbit while I was looking to see if there was a probationary period here; it was part of what prompted me to post this thread, matter of fact. I was curious as to whether there were other little suggestions/informal rules of thumb like that here. :)
