First OD i had to wait for hours then they put me alone on an adult ward because they couldn't find a bed on the children's ward and it was horrible, the nurses up there basically ignored me. A&E was ok. Second time I was lucky and seen by a very caring doctor, once on the children's ward most staff were nice and helpful, a few suggested I didn't need to be there and I was relaly fine when i clearly wasn't. Have had some less than nice experiences with paramedics !

I'm not short, I'm space efficient
The first time i went to A&E was for an OD. I had not been in hospital since i was 7 so i never really knew were A&E was so stupid me i went to the wrong desk! As soon as i told her she walked me down to A&E and had her arm over my shoulder, i was like booked in and taken straight to a bed. A nurse who i did not really like took the bloods and asked how many i had taken i told her why i have no idea next thing i saw her tell another nurse how many i had taken. I got moved again and i lovely male nurse came and started talking to me while the other nurses just seemed to be doing the job not really caring , he asked me how i was feeling etc if i was okay. I had a young, calm paitent dr ask the why when what with questions and she paitently waited for me to tell her. That same male nurse ( Paul) litrally took my boots off as i did not care and ( this was when i was in short stay ward) I thanked him. Another nurse who was really nice Nicky kept checking on me asking if i was okay if i wanted to talk etc I did talk etc and later i was telling her i was scared of my parents finding out and got a little upset she told me' Don’t worry .., I will try my damn hardest to make sure I see them first' She was lovely and gave her time up to listen to me like i said whenever she said me looking a little down she would always pop her head in and normally sit down on my bed, telling me things would get better etc . Another nurse on that night shift did not judge me and we were having a joke. Then about 1-2 am i went to the loo she asked if i was okay. One doctor i saw i disliked he did not seem to care about me it was like i was a waste of time taking up that bed and only wanted to know how much i took .

When I have gone in for SI nearly all of the nurses have been great. Talking to me calmly, paitently one nurse asked if i wanted any pain killers for the wound. Later she came and said if i wanted to talk or go somewere quiet to wait i could. There was one nurse who i dont really like she just seemed like she did not care about me really. That again i was wasting time/ space by being there and when i nodded to ' have you done it yourself' she proper sighed. Another doctor was nice, though she was not great with MH SH etc she tried hard bless her and just waited for me to speak did not pressure me telling me that what she was about to do would be cold.

Sorry i have completely gone on there lol
Most of my experiences have been good.

I've been to the ER a total of 6 times (I think) for self-inflicted injuries over the past 2 years. I've had some really bad experiences where I've been called a child and how I need to grow up. I had one doctor tell me I was too young to feel this way and then the next time a different doctor said I was too old for this "nonsense" and to grow up. One time the doctor made me show him my wrists and he was just really awful about it. My teacher said afterwards that she wanted to punch him in the face, and she is such a sweethearted person. For the most part the crisis workers I've seen have been good. One was a bit frustrated with me because I couldn't answer her questions. The last time I took an OD and was put on a form without being told until the security guards came to escort me upstairs so that wasn't so good.
For the most part not horrible compared to some stories. I don't want to have to go back though!!

It's the children the world almost breaks that grow up to save it.

i was in the er for like a day, i didnt attempt but i told them i had thoughts about it, aweful experience I never want to go back, no matter how triggered i get i cant let myself get back that was back when i was si and had to show my mom so they didnt surprise her oh my
My attempt was 2 years ago, was in-patient for a week, thought it was stupid that they wouldn't help me, just kept me safe.
I went to A&E a couple Tuesdays ago for suicidal idealization and SI getting worse. I did tell them that I didn't cut myself, which is true, but they were still concerned about the SI. I'm doing a bit better now though.
I've had varied experiences too. I think about half the staff I encounter are hostile, and half aren't. I get the tisking, the abrupt answers the disapproving looks, but generally the hostility isn't too overt. I've had a nurse pass my file to a second nurse right in front of me saying "I don't want IT, you take it" and stuff like that, but it's generally not too bad.
The last two times I was in I had the same nurse (to start with). The first of those times she'd caught me cutting in the bathroom and called security and stuff, and even though I'd broken her trust or whatever she still treated me with respect. I really liked her. And the last time I was in she remembered me and was really nice.
The doctors are definitally lazy when it comes to self-inflicted wounds. I've had ones that needed steri's that they've just wacked a bandage on, I've had ones needing stitches that they've half-arsed steri'd. The first time I went it the doctor cleaned the wound VERY aggressively, but yeah.
My experiences are definitely mixed, but never anything too extreme on either side of the good bad scale.
"Watch me fault her "you're living like a disaster". She said "kill me faster", with strawberry gashes all over"
wow - x.silence, that's awful. like, ridiculous. talk about evil nurses - I feel like they came out of a quentin tarantino movie or something.
[I've never had any emergency room experiences, so I'm just butting in here, feel free to ignore me.]
but those nurses make me kinda MAD. they seem really ignorant. I feel full of righteous indignation right now... ok that sounds trite but GOOD LORD.
Haha. You are so right. They make me so mad too!

SAME HERE. That's exactly why I chose to go to nursing school. Future nurses who actually know how to treat mental health patients unite!
I wanna stay inside all day

I went to A&E for OD once & had cuts checked. The nurse was very down to earth and sensible. She made me realise that the scars are there forever and wont fade properly. The doctor was brilliant, and I think she may have been an SIer at some point as I noticed some scars on her arm. Everyone was really kind. The mental health nurse was good too but he seemed to get the wrong end of the stick and was convinced the OD was SI because I cut aswell not a suicide attempt and sent me away with a number for an SI support group.
Im kinda surprised and some of the bad experiences on here as surely if you are a nurse you are supposed to be caring and understanding?
I've mainly had good experiences at A&E. I somehow managed to see the same doctor three times in a row and he was really concerned about me, even getting the psychiatrist down to see me one time. He tried to warn me that if I kept coming to A&E at the rate I was they'd probably section me.
One time it took them an hour to stitch me because it was a junior doctor doing it being supervised. The anaesthetic had started to wear off at the end but I didnt want to be injected all over again so I didn't say anything.
I got a lot of "you are an intelligent girl, you know you shouldnt be doing this to yourself, think of your future" type comments. One doctor even suggested I cut myself because I was bored.
But I was never refused anaesthetic. Although one time I was steri'd when I should have been stitched.
I remember in one A&E theatre having a laugh and a joke with the doctor being stitched and the nurse watching. It was quite surreal. I was lying down as he was stitching my leg and he said "do you want to watch?" and I was like "yes please!" lol.
Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…
