Buddhism for me, as there is no god, just the respect for the buddhas teachings, i only recently found myself drawn to this but it really has helped, even if only 35% towards giving me some peace in my mind, i always wanted to be able to get out of my head for a while and used to get fustrated so much as i couldn't, but meditation gives me a break from thoughts for a short while.

This completely. I'd love to believe, but I just can't.

Ok, so apparently there is no discussion, maybe I can irritate people into starting one (please be civil).

I was brought up Catholic and then decided I was Buddhist before becoming an evangelical/fundamentalist Christian (the latter whilst at a top uni) and now I suppose I am agnostic.

Do you think these changes are a result of my mental health problems, including bpd and if not, why is it people like me keep seeking?

I would guess they probably do have a lot to do with your mental health problems (and I really do not mean that in a "only crazy people beleive in god" kind of way). I think that when you struggle with your mental health it raises a lot of questions about who you are, why you are suffering, do you deserve it etc. and religion is one of those things that claim to have answers to those questions.

I know when I was 17 I really tried to be a christian, I went to christian union at college, I went on a holiday camp type thing. And looking back I didn't believe in God, but I tried desperately too. That was the year my little sister attempted suicide and my Mum had a breakdown. I didn't have a lot of support at home (because everyone else was in desperate need of support, not that they didn't want to be there for me) and the church was something that offered support.

I also think a lot of aspects of religion can be very positive for your mental health, I mean take the sacrament of confession, it's basically a form of counselling, getting your sins off your chest and then being forgiven for them. Buddism you have meditation and breathing which are great methods of relaxation.

I think when life gets really **** it's only natural to hope that there is some magical power or some heaven (which is essentially a big living happily ever after).

Reality leaves a lot to the imagination

Thanks Heidi, maybe we can get some discussion going here now.

btw, my religious persuasion is perfectly true as above apart from one littel thing. For some reason I am "drawn" back to God and I have no idea why.

bpd - black and white thinking - I can see how my religious beliefs could be distorted by it.

Sorry, rambling, no proper thoughts right now.

I'm not very religious. I'm still in that 'figuring it out' stage. I never grew up with a religion or anything so that's part of it.

I guess I'm agnostic.
I believe something is out there, I just don't know what.
