They seem to do okay with enforcing the no smoking with children under 18 in your car.... and how is enforcing no smoking when your driving any harder then enforcing not using your mobile whilst driving? I know a lot of people that have had tickets and lost points for using there phone while driving.

Australia sounds like it's a lot more effective at enforcing these kind of laws. Over here people drive around on their mobiles all the time and rarely get caught and punished so they wouldn't for smoking either. My friend saw a lorry driver on the motorway using a laptop on his steering wheel!
If you were smoking / using your mobile on the motorway and there was no police around which there rarely is unless there's an accident etc (or perhaps there are more but they're undercover) it would be very difficult for the 'law breaker' to be even seen committing the 'crime.'
I personally wouldnt drive and smoke, but if people can concentrate on both then fine. This thread makes me want to smoke though :P
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.
the other week i watched my dad parallel park, on a hill, smoking a cigarette, patting a dog out the window and talking to the dogs owner at the same time! it was quite impressive.
I roll over and hold on tightly, and whisper "If they want you, they're gonna have to fight me,"
I'm a heavy smoker but i'd never smoke while driving.
If i'm on a long journey i'll pull over and take a fag break.
It should be banned, it's driving without due care and attention.
I think that there comes a point where a person has to take responsibility for their own behaviour behind the wheel. If you are pootling through a suburban route, or stuck in city traffic, having a smoke or listening to the radio isn't going to be a problem, but doing so on the motorway or at a difficult junction is another matter.
they will just create a sound proof bubble for the driver while they have match sticks to keep there eyes open and an electric shock to keep them alert very soon.

I hear the M25 is a good place to get stuck in traffic.
When i could drive (license was robbed from me when i was in hospital) i would smoke when driving, albeit, not very much. I think the worse that happened was pulling up to a red light, lighting a fag while sat there & having the lights change colour as i was lighting my fag, causing the guy behind me (that had been up my arse along the seafront) honk his horn at me for 'taking my time'. he then went on to over take me & get flashed by the speed camera.
i don't know how i sit with this one, i've watched my mother smoke a fag while riding her motorcyle, that was amusing.
the thing is, my father has carpal tunnel in his wrist (or at least i think thats it :S) so he struggles to change gear when his wrist is stiff, does that mean he should be banned?
