Most definitely. People used to get me to proof-read their English GCSE essays. I understand that people find it difficult, though. I do, however, advocate proof-reading. It can make a lot of difference!

One thing I don't understand is how so many people can go through eleven plus years of education without knowing how to properly use an apostrophe. Even if you find things hard, some things can be taught.

I just have to say that using dyslexia as an excuse for poor spelling and grammar in typed content really irritates me. Before you jump on me, I actually am dyslexic myself, and it's because of that that it irritates me so much. Hand written text is a different story -- my professors sometimes still circle misspelt words on my university exams -- but dyslexia most assuredly does not prevent one from using spell check, which has come standard on most computers for quite some time now. And as for using capital letters and punctuation, well, I'd buy that for a 6-year-old but dyslexia stops being an excuse for failing to start a sentence with a capital letter long before one is old enough to post in online forums and the like. Sure dyslexia makes it harder to learn spelling and grammar, but I see it used so often as an excuse to not even make an effort, and not making an effort is always just down to laziness, not a learning disability, but it ends up spreading the misconception that people with dyslexia are somehow incapable of decent writing no matter how hard we try, and lets the people who use it as an excuse continue to write poorly when they're perfectly capable of improving if they make an effort (and I don't just mean that in that one instance their writing would have been better if they'd tried, but rather that constant practice will help anyone, dyslexic or not, improve their writing overall). It also irritates me because dyslexia primarily effects reading (that's even where the name comes from; writing is secondary to that in dyslexia -- if the primary difficulty is in writing, it's not dyslexia), and a lack of capital letters and punctuation, extremely poor spelling, and writing entirely in caps all make it bloody hard to read what someone's written.

I won't claim by any means that my spelling and grammar are perfect, but I do always at least try to get rid of the red underlines for misspelt words and using capital letters and punctuation reasonably appropriately, even in text messages (although admittedly sometimes not in IMs, where the conversation is taking place in real time), unless I'm either drunk, extremely tired, or apparently if I'm somewhat high on the codeine I've been given after having my wisdom teeth out.

I generally don't correct other people's spelling or grammar though (unless they've asked me to of course), unless it's appropriate for the context (e.g. when I'm helping my students with writing assignments, or if I'm reading over something that's to be posted someplace on RYL on behalf of the CT), or if I'm annoyed with someone and intentionally being pretentious, which I tend to do mainly in debates academic/intellectual topics when I feel like someone's being really arrogant but acting like a complete idiot, or if someone's bragging about his/her writing skills and using poor writing to do so. Although I also find it tempting to correct people's spelling and grammar when they're writing about spelling and grammar... Like how, as Marie already pointed out, the title of this thread really should start with a capital letter and end with a question mark.

no i dont notice i blame my dyslexia, i was never diagnosed with it until i was 16/17 once id left school so by the time they tried helping me with it i was so set in bad habbits and miss grammar and spelling ive never really picked it up. that and when i do try to get it all right it looks right and sounds right so to me it is and sadly i often ignore spell check because it looks and sounds right to me so thats all that matters lol. i really should get some help with it but i dont have a need to really because im not at college or uni and if i ever get a job where i need to write loads i'll just listen to it then lol. but i do have to say i have got alot better with spelling but grammar still isnt that amazing. and i will sound so dumb but i worked out how to use a dictionary because i always hated people saying "if you cant spell it look it up in a dictionary" if you cant spell it how can you look it up in a dictionary ?????

that im too lazy to if i notice it lol but i dont think i ever do so hey not a problem lol

i hate my brother being a grammar nazi though because hes super smart and super aragent (think thats how you spell it)

Sorry to hi-jack this thread for a minute, but the thread reminded me of this:

EDIT: Those of you who are grammar Nazis, have you read a book called: Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss. It's fantastic =]

It always annoys me when people who I know can actually spell really well, like people who I went to school with and the such, and they purposefully use bad grammar.

I don't see a point to it, really.

Yes. I never point out mistakes, but it really annoys me. I understand that it's more difficult for some people, if they have dyslexia or something. But mostly, I think people could try a bit harder.

I also tend to type what I want without thinking about it too much, but I still manage to have decent spelling and grammar (most of the time). It just becomes natural after a while.

I'm quite surprised that you're not penalised on it. I'm really grateful that that wasn't the case at my school. It's all very well being marked only on the content, but outside school, when you need to apply for jobs and any number of other things, no-one is going to be impressed by poor grammar.

Yeah, I sound like a bitch now.

Same for me. A lot of the time, I hold back any remarks I have to say on people's spelling and grammar. Sometimes I just can't help myself, though. My two pet annoyances are:

> Putting ".........." instead of "..." (There are only three dots, dammit!)

> Putting "loose" instead of "lose".

Those kind of mistakes make me want to pull my hair out and hit someone over the head with a dictionary! =P

I'll tell you what annoys me. When people say "Its not my fault" (it should be "it's") or "The door fell off it's hinges" (it should be "its").

I've never understood the point of either of those types of writing, but it seems like a lot of the time people use both of those, but especially the second one, to try to make whatever they've written stand out more, like people are often trying to do when they write entirely in capital letters. Personally though I just think it makes it freaking hard to read.

I can't handle text speak either. I find it's really hard to read things with really poor spelling and grammar, which I think is in large part because I'm dyslexic. Do you find that too?

I actually completely missed it. I notice when words are completely garbled, but if it's just off by a letter or two, and is still reasonably phonetic and such, I rarely notice when words are misspelt unless I have the red underline to tell me they are. Supposedly it's related to being dyslexic, and is one of the reasons I had so much trouble learning to spell, and still have trouble spelling even quite common words when I don't have spell check to catch misspellings for me. But even so, I always catch misspellings in my own writing unless it's a correct spelling of a different word because even my web browser has spell check that underlines misspelt words for me (like "misspelt" has been every time I've tried to type it, as I've consistently been writing "mispelt" the first try, even though I've had to change it every time).

I don't think grammar matters above making a sensitive, well-thought-out point about something, though.

i just don't see point in it with message boards and texts seeing as there not marked by professionals. never been a fan of punctuation either.

But sometimes punctuation makes something easier to read. I've seen people post on here - whole posts - with literally no full-stops or commas, and they're really hard to decipher. I'm not annoyed about it, but it makes things easier to read if there's punctuation.

They aren't marked by 'professionals' but, to me it just feels better to use the English language properly. I'd have to force myself to write at a worse standard to be honest plus it's easier if your writing well in less formal situations to not have to change from one writing style to another. Maybe it's just me but I think ryting lyk dis jus luks inkrediblee stoopid.
