Thank god for that, I thought I was the only one irritated by the whiney little gits who come on every so often, complaining they're triggered by the fact someone said 'cut'.
I remember being asked to stop talking because I said I had hairy legs and had asked my mum to pick up razors, but they were crappy single blade ones.
And they were all "Please stop saying razors, it's triggering me."
Well, hairy legs aren't sexy, I need them!

Wow, I do believe that was a bit of an odd rant.

I'm gonna tap him like a maple tree. I'm gonna search him for some syrups. I'm gonna be having sex with him.

also.. i think words can be triggering... I mean the word "rape" sets me off... I can't say the word in real life, and until recently couldn't even type it... a few other (slightly werider) words trigger me sometimes too... and i think words like razor and cut can be similar, they are words that some people hold great emotional links to and the word can sort of stir up the emotions...

i agree that words can have a strong emotional link to people. i still think they should be able to be spoken openly - i don't agree with censoring words like rape, abuse, cut, razor etc. because then all our conversations would be like "i picked up a *bleep* and *bleeped* myself with it, i'm having scary memories of when i was *bleep*" and that would be difficult to follow, and i think things need to be out in the open.

but i feel that people should be aware of the general content of posts if it could cause them to feel "triggered".

no i don't tjiink they should be censored either... i mean we can't avoid them offline, and censoring hem would be hard...

just pointing out that people may not be being as pathetic and whiney as is being implied

I agree. I can see the need for some of them - personally I don't get 'triggered' unless I am in that mindset and set out intentionally to 'trigger' myself, but fair enough if people don't want to read particularly graphic posts, or if they want to avoid posts about sexual abuse or something in another forum, or even just with the Severely Triggering label, even though I think it's very subjective.

But having 'Mildly Triggering - ED' seems a bit pointless imo - it's an Eating Disorders forum, 99.9% of threads are likely to have some mention of eating disorders that is going to be seen as potentially triggering. And same with SI in the Self-Injury board

Having so many threads labelled as triggering just means they're not noticeable anymore, I don't notice them at all, so it just means a thread that is genuinely (maybe wrong word?) triggering is less likely to stand out.

And also, as above, it is a bit worrying if someone is so triggered that they can't cope with the mention of blood or cuts. But hmm. This probably sounds really harsh and/or patronising, and it isn't intended to.

I've been saying in the CT thread that they are becoming pointless. I mean, you guys aren't stupid enough to not realize that the ED board will be triggering for EDs, or A&B is triggering for abuse, or Serious Discussion will be triggering for everything.

The trigger lables are unnecessary and are becoming pointless. I can see the point in them when they crossover, for example, an ED post containing something about abuse. That's fine. But everyone should know by the title of the forum that it will be triggering for that subject. You're not stupid.

And -Choley, that is when it starts getting completely ridiculous. What does that person do if they're out shopping and see the word razor? Break down and cry?

i'm with you there :) everyone should be free to dance to the beat of their own drummer.

i know what you guys mean, Too Shy and Rawrk, i was typing out a similar reply about the SI/ED forums having obvious content. but i don't think it's as clear-cut as forums like Veterans Support, Serious Discussion, R&V and so-on. i'd still like to know what is in individual threads so i can weigh up for myself whether or not they are "safe" for me to read at that point in time. i also think they are very important in the A&B forum, even though that forum is pretty clear too, because the "triggers" for physical abuse and sexual abuse can be different for different people. i would be saddened but not at all triggered by a physical abuse thread, but not for sexual abuse.

The thing is, it's nearly impossible not to use a lot of these words. The only way I can really think about setting labels if certain words like that are mentioned is having some sort of a scale.... like rank it 1-5 and have a guideline... where 1 is nothing, 2 mentions the words, and 3-5 the act itself, in various degrees. I just don't know how practical it would be to implement it.

what about like in the A&B section though where there are a great range of possibel triggers? I mean SA doesn't have the same triggers as PA or EA... or bullying...
but they are all in that section

how so?
i think it is extremely obvious which threads are linked to sexual abuse (about 90% of them) and which are linked to bullying.
personally if i was feeling particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse trigger i would probably know not to go into a forum in which i know 90% of threads are about sexual abuse.
the only time i think trigger warnings are even the least bit helpful is in r&v because sometimes i dont feel like reading about ed's (mostly because i don't know much about them, don't care for them really) but the reason it's helpful is because r&v is all mixed up. the forums have become so sub-forumed now that i think it's made majority of trigger warnings redundant.

take what you love
burn it down.

In the A/B forum, personally, I think there should be a bullying label, emotional abuse label, physical abuse label, and sexual abuse label. I think the label and the title together should help point you in the direction of something you feel up to helping with. I mean, it is the Abuse and Bullying forum and I feel that the bullying posts are getting buried by the abuse posts. But that is my feeling on that board in particular.

But you expect that. It says it in the description. You -know- each thread -will-contain something about abuse/sexual abuse/blah.

True, that forum is for abuse and bullying, but there are different types and it's a wide range.

how is it?

what if you wanted to go in and support someone on an issue that wasn't linked with sexual abuse? because of the sake of a trigger warning, you might have to stop using the whole thread?
