The modulus sign sort of makes all things positive (so in a way it's kinda appropriate here come to think of it).
(someone stop me quick) so in y=x, instead of the line going straight through the (0,0) and in to the (negative,negative) quadrant, it bounces up into the (negative,positive) quadrant.... making a large V shape...
