Despite speaking in a slightly rough north Dublin accent, I sometimes think in an English accent. I don't do it consciously, it just sort of happens. It's a little strange, but I like it. It's like sharing my head with Stephen Fry.
I'm not as knowledgeable about British accents as most of you presumably are, though I've read a decent amount on the net about the subject and of course have been listening to this thread's posts.
I think I may post mine on here because I cant figure out my accent, sometimes its Welsh (I live there now) and some words its Irish (lived there for a few years) and sometimes Ive not got a clue!
So I may upload for people to judge for me =P
Sarah: Give me the child.
Jareth: Sarah beware. I have been generous up till now. I can be cruel.
Sarah: Generous? What have you done that's generous?
Jareth: Everything! Everything you have wanted I have done. You asked the child be taken, I took him. You cowered before me, I was frightening. I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside down, and I have done it all for you! I am exhausted from living up to your expectations of me. Isn't that generous?
Well I have a British accent, I didn't think that counted until I went to Canada and my cousins took the piss.
I love Irish accents. My music teacher has the coolest accent. It's sing-song Irish, and she always sounds soft and gentle, even when she's angry. I joined Glee Club just for the accent, but now I love it (Glee Club)!
Accents are a minefield if you allow them to be. I reckon I can distinguish between at least 20-30 from around UK. But so what? The fact that someone hails from, say for example, the north-east doesn't make them any less worthy than any other UK citizen. They may be just as intelligent/educated as anyone else, and just as good people - or quite possibly better.
But, I have to admit that I find myself amused at someone like Fiona Bruce who's paid huge sums as a newsreader, being unable to pronounce "thousands". It comes out as "fahsends"! However, we all understand her most of the time and that's surely what matters.
And many of our UK accents are delightful. Let's be thankful and enjoy them ...
