I need help. I think that I am becoming intolerant of cows milk. Every Sunday I have cornflakes and cows milk. I would like to try alternative milks. My criteria is something that works equally well in coffee as well as cereal. I have tried almond milk but didn't like the taste. Preferably something that's available in Tesco's. I am confused as to what non cows milk are suitable plus tastes nice hence why I am posting.

Oat milk is generally regarded as the nicest/most versatile by most people I know who use plant milk. It's quite creamy, and doesn't have a super noticeable flavour. I'd suggest getting long life/UHT rather than fresh because in my experience the fresh plant milks are more likely to separate in hot drinks (it's not dangerous or really horrible when it separates but it's nicer when it doesn't!). There's normally sweetened and unsweetened versions - it might be worth trying both because everyone has different preferences there. Tesco has an own brand oat milk which is a bit cheaper too.

If you find you don't like any plant milks would it be worth switching to a lactose free dairy milk?

ETA: Jenna beat me but I was much more helpful so

ETA2: Also, Alpro do have some options that are designed for hot drinks, which *are* in the chilled section. They're quite expensive though.

Screw you Lio.
I will add that I think sometimes people think the barista versions are better in hot drinks? K always used to get Oatly barista, although aren't Oatly a Big Bad Nasty Company now?

I don't think barista versions are better unless you want froth. They are more expensive too.

I think Oatly have done a fair few Big Bad things mostly in the US

-- ok so they have shares in companies involved in the deforestation of the Amazon, and in the UK they tried to sue a small business over copyright and lost

Thanks Jenna and Elmer for your input. I added oat milk to my tesco order so hopefully I will get it. Tesco have been **** lately for not having everything you order.

Yes it's just my ibs being a troll lately. Apparently intolerance to dairy is super common in ibs. Obviously i will contact gp if it don't work or gets worse.

I think Oatly is disgusting, ethics aside, but I do really enjoy oat milk in general. In cereal I typically do almond milk though. In tea and coffee I use an oat milk creamer.

I really like the Califia Farms brand stuff I've tried... can't speak to ethics but like... most of these companies have been bought out by the big mega corps anyways so you can't really win. I dunno if that's a brand you all have there though.

We don't really use creamer here, but I'm super intrigued what it's like - I can't find any vegan creamer to buy online that doesn't cost several weeks of groceries though (slight exaggeration)

I get the Califia Farms cold brew coffee, I really like it. We do have their products here but again, their almond milk is *expensive*

One time in Costa me and K made a big old fuss because they didn’t have any good non-dairy milks so we had to have almond milk and were all like ‘well if that’s all you’ve got then we’ll have it, but we’re not going to enjoy it ’.

Then it was totally fine and we all felt a bit sheepish.

Oh interesting! I use the creamer when I make hot chocolate too. I use it and almond milk plus my hot cocoa mix. It's thicker than milk and usually sweetened. I did not know it was not a thing there.

I think drinking almond milk is disgusting. But it's what I use in cooking/baking, unless a recipe calls for coconut milk.

I recieved the oat milk this week and tried it in my coffee. I liked the taste. I only have cereal once a week so will report back once I have tried it.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, at least in your coffee

Just out of curiosity what brand did you go for? There's so many it can be quite confusing!
