Ermmmm Sabriel by Gareth Nix
How I live Now by Meg Rossof?
Feast of Love by Charles Baxter << ok it is a romance novell but not your traditional one I hated them too and then I read this beauty.
"And just like the movies, we play out our last scene. You won't cry, I won't scream."
"There's just chaos, and violence, and random unpredictable evil that comes out of no where. && rips you to shreads."
I have read some of the classics, and The Great Gatsby was on some of the lists, so thanks for the head up Claire and Jade :) Oh and thanks for the suggestions too.

"Blah blah blah blah!"
See, The Great Gatsby must have something good about it since it's always high on these sorts of lists. So you might take something from it. Might be worth going to a book shop and reading the first few pages to see if you can get into it.
Discworld novels are always worth a read. As are some Stephen King ones. Some James Patterson or Jeffery Deaver if you want some crime/thriller novels that are easy to read and not too heavy. That's a problem I have with the more critically acclaimed books, that most are pretty heavy going.
I think at the weekend I'll raid my brother's book collection as he has a lot of Jeffrey Deaver. I've never tried reading them but I might give it a go. I do love Stephen King, I've put Carrie on the list and I know there's more of his I want to read but I cannot think for the life of me the others.

It isn't a romance, though. It's a shallow, borderline abusive...thing where they claim to "love" each other because she thinks he's ~beautiful~ and he finds her ~mysterious~ because he can't look into her head (mainly because there's nothing there).
