Chapter 15
When I woke up the next morning, it took me a few minutes to remember where I was. It was early, about 6am, and only just beginning to get light outside. My room, however, was bright from the corridor, the lights of which had been left on all night. I hadn't had much time to take in my surroundings the previous evening, but in the dim light I could see that the walls were painted a warm orange. The room was a perfect mirror image, with two single beds, two wardrobes and two sets of drawers. The bed over the other side of the room was empty, and I vaguely recalled being told that the occupant would be arriving later that day.
After it became apparent that I wasn't going back to sleep, I swung my legs out of bed and slid on the clothes I had been wearing the night before. I slowly opened the door, wincing as it creaked loudly, and peered out. The corridor seemed deserted, and I tiptoed out, pausing every few seconds to listen for footsteps. I reached the end of the corridor without incident, and swiftly ran down the stairs to the ground floor. One look at the front door told me that I had more chance of sprouting wings and flying, so I headed into the lounge on the right hand side. The window opened without protest and I was easily able to clamber out, dropping the few feet to the floor and landing lightly on my feet.
The morning was crisp and cold, frost crunching beneath my bare feet as i wandered across the frozen grass. It was a beautiful winter's morning, the sun was just peeking over the horizon and there was a robin pecking it's way across the drive. I watched it for a while, barely noticing the ice beginning to gnaw at my toes.
By eight thirty, the scheduled rising time, I had completed two full circuits of the grounds. They were beautiful, picturesque and unspoilt, with so many animals and winter flowers to look at. Several times i wished i had my drawing pad with me, but it was in the rucksack that had been confiscated until the contense could be checked by security. I wasn't that bothered. They werent going to find anything.
Inside, I heard a bell ring. One by one, the curtains across the dorm windows were flung wide, and the sash windows opened, allowing in the cool air. Girly shrieks and laughs floated across the air, and i smiled despite myself. I might not really want to be here, but the very nature of the place was infectious. You couldn't help but feel happy here.
Sighing, I hurried back through the window before anyone noticed I was missing. I went back to my room and grabbed my new towel before heading to the bathroom for a shower. There was a short queue, but i didnt have to wait long as there were five cubicles and showers were limited to five minutes each. I hurridly washed my hair and body before scrambling out to make way for the next girl in line.
By the time I arrived back at my room, the other bed was occupied. Piles of new clothing and belongings were strewn everywhere, and in the midst of the chaos sat a girl of around my age. From where I stood in the doorway, all i could see was the top of her head, surrounded by a mane of flaming scarlet hair. Unsure what to say, I moved over to my bed and sat down, concentrating on preparing myself for the day ahead.
By the time I was dry and dressed, and my hair had been scraped back into a manageable pony, the girl had put away most of her things. She lay on her back on her bed reading Cosmo, one delicate foot waving in the air. As I stood, she glanced up, then did a double take, her eyes meeting mine again.
In that second between glances, my heart stopped. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. Her face was wide and heart shaped, her eyes large and the most brilliant green I had ever seen. Neatly ringed with liner, they jumped from her face, capturing my gaze. Her lips were wide and full, somehow balancing out her face and making her look, well, perfect.
Eventually, I realised that I was supposed to say something. But what to say?? What wasn't going to make me sound like a complete idiot?? In the end, I decided simple was best.
"Hey. I'm Chlo." My voice came out much softer than I planned, almost breathy. I smiled hopefully.
"Lauren. I guess we're going to be roomies then??"
"Looks that way. Before you ask, I dont snore, or sleepwalk for that matter."
She looked at me strangely, then suddenly, she grinned, a delicate laugh filling the silence. I smiled too.
"Good thing about the snoring. Shame about the sleepwalking. I wouldn't mind waking up to find you in my bed."
As I looked at her, trying to figure out what she meant, and if she was serious, someone called her name. Getting up, she grinned at me, winked, and walked out the door. I stood there for a few seconds, bemused, before heading down to breakfast.
