Advice on beating self harming...

Hi All,

I'm a self harmer and have been for years and I'm really trying and wanting to recover from this. I have just found out a friend of mine
is a cutter too and also wishes to stop.

I just wondered if anyone knew from past experiences if it helps over coming it with a someone who truly understands and is going thorugh it all with you or is it always best to have someone totally unbiased and just there to see you through?

Thank you in advance for any advice

it depends how much you both want recovary.. if you both really want it, then its a great idea, but if one of you is going to hold the other back then its not such a good idea
however i think both of you will be able to help each other

i had a bad experience which ended up with the other person begging me to cut so hed feel better about doing it, but i know others who have totally recovard with the help of another SHer

hope thats helped a bit
PM anytime

I think it really depends on the situation and you personally: I think had I been trying to recover alongside another SIer, I would have been triggered every time they slipped. My boyfriend at the time and my therapist were fantastic support. However, I also know that at times I desperately wanted somebody to truly understand what I was going through. However supportive my boyfriend was, he didn't have a real understanding of how I felt.

If you think that you can support each other then that's fantastic; it might also be worthwhile having a little bit of outside help too, just to put things in perspective when you need it.
Good luck
xoxo

I'm going to echo what others have said, mainly that it depends on the situation and your individual needs. One reason why I like this site so much is that there's a lot of people who truly understand how hard it is to stop. I found that my friends in "real life" wanted to be supportive, but couldn't understand why I was hesitant to "just stop."
