Haloperidol

As you know I'm currently in psych hospital.
I've been taking haloperiol PRN (take when necessary) for three weeks so far. I've been taking it every day and sometimes twice a day. It is very effective against the voices. When I am hearing voices and am very distressed, they give me the haloperidol and it works wonders. I asked them if I could be put on it as a daily medication (like my olanzapine), but they said no as there are too many side-effects. But the olanzapine doesn't do much for the voices/hallucinations/distress and without the haloperidol for moments of distress I wouldn't get through the day. It doesn't give me many side-effects and if I do have side-effects, they're mild and I take procyclidine for it.
Do you think its worth trying to convince the doctor to write me up for it as a daily medication, or would you say that its too harmful? I would do almost anything for the voices/hallucinations/apparent delusions to go away.
Haloperidol is one of the older antipsychotics I believe.
But it works so well...
(I take 5mg PRN)

PM me if you want a PDF copy of the ICD-10 or the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. I ALSO HAVE THE DSM-V BOOK and am a pharmacology student.

I have a visual impairment / neurological problems so I need people to type in clear text and no funny fonts. Also excuse any typos, my vision blocks things out.
I have autism and have problems communicating, PMs included.
Just becasue I type well doesn't mean I speak well. I am only part time verbal.

I would suggest simply been honest about what you find works and what doesn't work, if your current medication isn't working for you then tell the doctors that. Equally, if a certain medication works better for you, then tell them.

Though, the doctors know what's best and will do what they can, they wouldn't do anything which could leave you at further risk so been honest lets them make informed and well-judged decisions. If they say the side-effects are too great, it's because they don't want you getting hurt and the negatives are far greater than the positives.

Stay Strong,

Yeah haloperidol is an older anti-psychotic, and it works more rapidly than olanzapine.
I think its only licenced for short-term use, but either way it has a high risk of extra-pyramidial side-effects, as youve found out and take procyclidine for. Maybe its because you are young? Being an older AP it can cause TD.
Its used a lot for elderly patients with dementia, or in low doses for nausea associated with palliative care for terminally ill people.

Yes - lorazepam and Haloperidol are a great mixture for my voices/general distress. But I purpose the chances of getting TD are too high. I'm just hoping I'll recover well. Thanks for the info. I'll talk to my doctor on Monday. I can't sleep well (note time of post) which is odd with olanzapine.

I took Haloperidol one and a half hours ago and I have no side-effects but the voices are less now.

I sleep for 3-4 hours a night even though I am on olanzapine and the Haloperidol is not getting me to sleep.

Last night I got the shakes really badly.

I'm scared.

I take this daily in a small dose. I have been on it for about 4 months now i think, maybe a bit less. It had lots of side effects to begin with, espcially sleepiness and nausea.
It works ok, but i find now that it is not as good as when i first started taking it.
Perhaps you could ask your doctor why you cant have it daily. Although as i asid it would not always be as beneficial.

Good luck

Hi Steelmaiden

I was only discharged from hospital this week after being on a section 2
like you I was taking lorazepam and Haloperidol whilst in hospital and the Haloperidol works wonders for me too but unable to take it as a daily med for the voices, I too was having to take it twice a day and when needed
It made me stay awake too but I was given a sleeping tablet to help combat this but although it did sometimes work I was so tired the next day I was unable to sleep in my bed because they locked my bedroom as I was at risk of suicide so they kept me in communal areas to keep an eye on me
I was on a 1 to 1 some of the time which I didnt like cos I was unable to have privacy

I hope you will be alright and pm me if you need to for some support

I am doing a bit better now and the Haloperidol has left my system as I went cold turkey on it with permission from the doctor. Funny I got permission because I was on section 2. The Haloperidol helped massively with the voices but the side-effects were too serious...I nearly got tardive dyskinesia.

I was getting injected a few times daily with lorazepam and haloperidol during my first two weeks of my section 2 because I was really ill and I refused all medications.

But now things are better.

How are you Minnie?

Thanks.

Sorry for the delay.
I've been off the haloperidol for over a week now and I'm at home. Things are still not good, but they're better than before.
