But I would say that because I'm currently wearing a Brighton & Hove Albion football shirt. I also own 4 official England shirts, 2 official Manchester United shirts and a Real Madrid shirt.

I like football. :)

I know, the problem is that i don't give up until i win or it's a stale mate... I'm far too stubborn for my own good, and i question absolutely everything... which leads me into these debates, though it makes me a good number of friends... oddly :P

You don't even have to be professional to get serious injuries... both me and Tom play rugby... that equals two known rugby players on this thread and both of us have suffered from serious injury!! I've been left with a weak ankle which frequently gives way... i have a 16 mile sponsored walk next week and its playing up *pokes it* :D

Cannot stand watching either so i voted neither. All they are doing is kicking a ball from one end of a field to the other.

Mithra, your comment about "30 posh blokes kicking a peanut about" is just so unkind - and totally misunderstands rugby.

Football vs Rugby is not a pissing contest. "Chacun a son gout" as the French say (go for whatever turns you on - not actually a literal translation ...)

But, if I were a lot younger and wanted to take, say, two small girls to watch a match, I know bloody well I'd rather take them to Twickenham than to your average First Division football ground. They wouldn't then have to try to cope with and try to understand the crudity that goes on both on the field and on the terraces.

I may be hated for saying it, but modern soccer is over-hyped, over-paid and greatly over-regarded. And, above all, modern-soccer-behaviour, both on and off the field, is vulgar, crude, money-driven and lacks any sense of example to set to its supporters.

So, there are my moderate views! I'll stand by for some sort of riposte from all you footie fans ...

Rugby you run with the ball.
Football you pass the ball.
The only time you kick it up the field is when you're goalkeeps clears.

Well I voted neither because I really don't like watching sport but if I had to choose between the two then I'd choose rugby - I think it's far more exciting!

You rugby fans really have to get over the whole, oh footballers are just over paid prima donna's who dive all the time. aswell as the whole gentlemanly oh we all respecting the referee nonsense.

Firstly, yes some players dive but they are not praissed for this and generally in the english league you don't get away with it. Secondly football is more of a team game, it just takes more paitence than rugby, you have to break down a defence rather than just keep running at each other til you get to cross the goal line, which is, i might add the full width off the pitch so how hard can it be. And the gentlemans game aspect is nonsence, i've endured rugby games and believe me endured is the word, where i've witnessed all kinds of under hand play, stamping on heads etc. yes they respect the referee but only because they are sent off if they don't, its not because they are better people. Theres a great deal of snobbishness towards football but the fact of the matter is, theres more money because its more entertaining.

Rugby is about getting hurt..... but getting back up and working for the team!!! You have to maintain your line and push forward, slowly but surley the stronger team will break through and pass to the wing to get the try... You said that footballers have to be agile, well the wings and fullbacks are often much lighter, faster and more agile; in comparison to the much bulkier, heavier, slower, but stronger. Rugby is blatantly much better by far! And football is only more profitable because it appeals to those unwilling to spend time learning the rules of rugby; and football is far more appealing for the lower classes and those without others to play with!!

Hey, Domicile, (picking up your post a bit late) I'd rather hoped I wasn't too dislikeable - I do try not to be.

As to rugby vs soccer, I revert to my argument - if you had a couple of young and innocent kids to take to a match, which would it be ... ?

Oh, and an earlier post suggested that all rugger players are posh. Be assured that not many of those I've met qualify in the least degree ...

If i had a couple of young kids?

I believe the blatant choice between Rugby and football would be the least of my worries... I'd have an awful lot of explaining to do first of all; and i doubt any possible future kids of mine would be innocent!! :P

I love the atmosphere of football. :)

I love the build-up to the World Cup, and Euro tournaments, although I'm not sure it'll be the same since England aren't actually in Euro 2008...!

It's the Chelsea/Bolton and Manchester United/Wigan matches this weekend, and I'm already so excited about it, even though I have a feeling that Manchester United will end up second.

I don't mind rugby either though. I own a rugby shirt. I just don't understand it. If I understood it, I'd probably like it more...:P

To all those who don't understand rugby, watch it on TV and listen to the commentators. They tend to explain what is happening and why.

Damn right. That feeling when I hear a sellout crowd singing the Sky Blue Song as the players walk out is

You mad? This is going to be one the best Euro's since the early 90's - no heartbreak penalty shootout drama, no English hooligans and some of the best players playing against each other - Holland/Italy, Holland/France, France/Italy, Czech/Portugal are going to be amazing!

Strangely, I agree and for once, Chelski actually deserve the title for once. I hope that United win the Champions League though. Also, Reading to avoid the drop, IMO.
