Cipralex?

I'm suppose to be starting on it for depression. i have the pills but i'm scared to start. Has anyone tried it? Is it helpful? What's it like? I know it wont make everything go away. To be honest, i dont even know if i want it to help. I guess im just scared to start on meds, the psych said ur suppose to stay on for 2 years! Anyone have any insight?

I was on Ciraplex Escitalopram, for a short while last year.
I came off it because I experienced adverse effects.
I don't think my doctor should have prescribed it me though anyway as it is known to increase suicidal thinking especially in under 18s.

Everyone reacts differently to different medication though. It could work really well for you :) I hope it helps. Don't be scared, remember - nothing ventured, nothing gained. Give it a go.

Take care xxx

I was on Cipralex. My mood swings were very very bad so i had to come off them.
But one of my friends has been on Cipralex since november and has been absolutely fine.
It affects some people, but not others. Like all medication really.
You'll be OK. If you don't get on with them then you don't get on with them but atleast you've tried.

Hi Eve of D and Missyem30.

I take Escitalopram (brand name Ciprolex). I take 20mg a day for anxiety and depression. I feel like it helps both, but it doesn't make me feel perfect and you shouldn't expect it to. I've been on it for about 6 months. Before that I was on Citalopram, just another form of the drug but with less of an affect on anxiety.

I think you should expect any form of mood altering medication to be taken for at least two years. I've been medicated for almost 5 years now. It's not a big deal once you get used to it.

I hope it works for you both.

hey, i was on cipralex for about 2 years, i remember the first few weeks were pretty sketchy mood wise but i have a mood disorder to add to it, didnt have many physical side affects and balanced out enough to function after 2 weeks i think. best part of cipralex is in that 2 years is didnt make me gain weight.
good luck on it, its worth giving a go for a while

I think this was the first antidepressant that I was on, it's a good starting point but I didn't find it very useful. As has been said, everyone reacts differently. You will most likely have some side effects for a while but they should pass. If they bother you a lot then get in touch with your doctor. I hope things work out well for you. Please get in touch any time. Take care. xxx

I put it down on paper and then the ghost does not ache so much.

Thank you all so much for the responses! They are very reassuring. Ya, everyone reacts differently i guess. your right, iwanttobreakfree, might as well take the risk. i can always stop if they make things worse, but i might as well try. i started the pills, they are making me a little nausous, but not much, it should pass.
I'm on 5mg now too Messyem, though i think they're working me up. It is hard to do anything now, i don't know how you do it with children! I hope they work out for you. My psych said it doesn't usually start working right away. you need a few weeks to get use to it before it'll have an effect for most ppl. good luck, pm me if u want to talk about it or anything.

Thanx again everyone :D. it means a lot.

I've been on them 6 (?) months now..or maybe four..not sure...but for me, after 6-8 years of different meds, i have FINALLY found the one that works!!!! Cipralex!!

I am indescribably happy, more energy, just better all round. Never had a side effect of ANY sort.
I love it, it truly is a wonder drug!!!(for me)
I'd say try...what a have you got to lose??? I know ppl are all different, but it may well have the same effect for you!!!
It wonderful, they are still adjusting, raising it slowly, as i started low, of course, and it works awhile then 'fizzles' out so he ups it and we just keep doing that.
But truly, i have been on over 25 (at least) meds and NOTHING has affected me this way...i feel wonderful!!

best of luck.
PLS keep us updated ok??
*fingers crossed for you* :o)

i took cipralex for about 3 months...

i hated it. it was horrible for me.

a lot of bad secondary effects.

gave me a lot of migraines, couldnt have an orgasm,i was always very tired and sleepy..didnt have the energy to do anything at all.
and increased my suicidal thoughts a lot.

Everyone is going to hurt you sooner or later.
You just have to decide whose worth the pain.

I'd just like to say, my previous post to this thread is wrong. So just ignore it.
I *thought* i had been on Cipralex. But it seems i was on some other anti depressant beginning with "C" which sounds similar (i'm awful with medication names).
However, strangely enough i have just been put onto Cipralex (on tuesday) along with Chlomoprazine. So. I guess we're in this together eh?
I hope you get on well with it though. And suffer no side effects.
xx

Just to be pedantic, you don't necessarily take any anti depressants for two years. The general rule is to take them 6 months symptom free, ie, until you feel well, then another 6 months after that with no symptoms and even then come off them very gradually. Glad you decided to give them a go, keep us updated. x

I have been on Cipralex on and off for 3-4 years, I ended up going back on it and am on 20mg still.

It does work faster in that it helps you to carry on.. I did have weight gain- boobs went from 32c to 34e!

The good thing is the tablets are small.. I had a relapse and understood why they say it takes 6 months to come off meds slowly- trying to do it cold turkey is not good as I did! Learnt my lesson the hard way..

Try it. I was the same as you I had the prescription and didnt use it until I had to.. xx

I found the first few weeks rather hard, and even the first month wasn't perfect, but after that I felt my mood get so much better. I was on citalopram before (a lower dose not so helpful for anxiety) and was better on escetalopram ciprolex (sp?).
Anyway, i wouldn't expect for it to help immediately, just give it time and see. Everyone reacts differently :)
