But would you say the same for a loud drunk walking down the street? A homeless person begging for money off of you? Or a person who was high on illegal drugs walking towards you? I bet you have as much prejudictic view as any other person. Just because people have strong beliefs on this view, doesn't mean that they are attempting to make themselves seem bigger than you. An di'm sure that nobody ever intended to appear that way.
The thing is,i dont hold prejudice views towards any of those people...maybe its because Ive had experience of all three,i dont know?If I did have a prejudice view on drunk people/high people Id be scared of them beating me up but then i wouldnt think a smoker would do that just because theyre having a cig. And drugs/drink is different as they both can change your mental state whereas smoking doesnt.
And actually yeh the way some people post their views makes them sound like that to be honest. This whole thread was about what would make us smokers quit and basically its changed into an 'omgz smokings awful'

There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.
i hate being made to feel like a criminal because i got addicted to ciggarettes during the most traumatic time of my life. especially when i take great care not to bother other people. and i think its really mean to prejudge people before knowing the full story. but of course, the full story might mean you have to get down off your high horse once in a while, and heaven forbid should the horses back get cold.
Out of all this, which was not I hasten to say meant as an attack on those who (misguidedly) choose to smoke, I am left feeling that not one convincing answer as to how to give up has been put forward.
Most smokers seem to be incorrigible and, when challenged, seem to fall back on "well, it's my choice, I'll stop if and when I want to and, meanwhile, you can Sod off!" And of course it is their choice and as long as they're prepared to live with the consequences, nor impose their habit on other people, OK.
I have some sympathy with whoever it was who said that they're tired of being made to feel like a criminal for smoking. As a car driver, living in the country where there is no realistic alternative to having ones own vehicle, I have a good deal of sympathy (though smokers do actually have a choice), and I particularly resent being told by Ministers who are driven around London in pool cars which do perhaps 5 mpg on a good day that I'm some sort of extravagant polluter. But that's getting off subject ... !
Tony.
PS. There was a young fellow in drag
Who was constantly puffing a fag.
But his friends, when he quizzed 'em
"Does smoking bring wisdom?"
Said "you'll end up a raddled old hag!"
I dont think im cool enough to know that QFT stands for >.<
My Mum, who is the BIGGEST anti smoker i know, even has some measure of sympathy for me. I remember, after *event* i was so distraught. I walked outside and did something i thought I would never ever ever do. I lit up a ciggarette in front of her. I turned to her and said "Mum, in a few months time i will regret smoking in front of you, but right now, i just dont care about anything."
And my Mum, who says constantly she watched both her parents die because of smoking. Who feels very strong about the issue did the most sympathetic and lovely thing ever.
She grabbed the ciggie off me, and took a drag.
Coughed her poor little heart out, but, it was the thought that mattered.
I never felt like she understood me more then through that simple act.
Lots of interesting posts but no-one's actually answered my question, which was just what would it take to make you stop smoking? Obviously best answered by those who are actually smokers!
Tony.
Pregnancy.
I have no quarms about ****ing up my own body. But to do something that would harm an unborn child (you actually want, not involing abortion etc) is disgusting.
And climb high to the highest rung, to shake fists at the sky.

Yeah, everybody kind of ignored Harley's Dad' intention of this thread!!! :P LOL The point i was trying to get across is that they're all types of drugs, they all alter the body and mind in some sort of way. You can't exactly say tobacco doesn't affect the mind, why does it cause addiction and then so apparently hard to quit???

by affecting the mind I mean not in the same way as drink/drugs-they dont affect your judgement of things, generally they dont make you aggressive etc. By affecting your mind I mean the way you feel when youre drunk/high isnt the same as when you have a cig.I wasnt referring to the addiction side.
Erin,I was having a memorial for my friend and my mother was there, I had a cig in front of her and she also took a drag, for solidarity more than anything i think :) xx

Im with Aurora on the pregnancy thing... I would never harm a baby for a few fags!!
In a sadistic kind of way, I dont think a family member dying due to a smoking related illness would affect me enough to quit. That sounds harsh, I know. It's not that I wouldn't care... It's just that I already know the dangers of smoking so it wouldn't be too much of a shock to the system if you get what I mean?!
In all seriousness though... what would it take to make me quit? Well as mentioned pregnancy, hopefully when I beat my eating disorder (which is my intention) and finally if someone cared so much that I saw it pained them to see me smoke. I also know that when quit I will being doing so "cold turkey".

Working behind a counter (Now quit) it disgusts me when heavily pregnant women come in, buying cigarettes. And alcopops. Why can't certain groups be banned from buying?
As a smoker, I'm against the idea of my hobby being banned outright... one of the few things that gets me outside during the week, heh. But if you're going to carry on smoking, atleast have the decency to abort it before it comes out a cripple.
