Hey im planning on travelling to europe in july/august this year and i was wondering does anyone have any suggestions for must see destinations. As the majority of people on here are from the UK i thought this may be agoodplace to start. Im also thinking of working for a while in England depends on how my money is going.
Well, i only know France and the Uk.
Obviously the best ones to do to 'see' Europe on a tight budget and time scale are London and Paris.
(Rome if you have the time but L + P are an hour or so's travel away from eachother where as Rome is alot further)
All depends what kind of things your into, if you can be more specific on time, budget, likes then i can help more, (e.g. do you do the gallery/museum/history thing?)
Okay, London: Thames - The big river London eye - The big wheel thing next to the river Houses of Parliament/Big Ben - The big old building and clock tower opposite the london eye and next to the river. The Globe Theatre - If you are into shakespeare (again, next to the thames) Covent Garden - Lots of off shops, very pretty, usually some cool street performers Open-top Red Bus Tour or The Frog Boat - Obviously the first is your standard typical english red bus but tours the main sights, you can hop on and off depending on what company you use. The frog boat is a yellow bus that does tours but also is clever in that the bus can drive into the water and become a boat in 2 seconds flat and tours the river too - its rather cool. The Theatre - Go and see something in the West End - its a must for tourists, even if slightly expensive it is well worth it - recommendations are : We Will Rock You (if you like Queen), Wicked (If you like things like the Wizard of Oz and Jesus Christ Super Star), Lion King (For any disney fan), Joseph and his technicolour dreamcoat (If you like religious camp classics), Chicago (not sure if its still on) The Parks - Hyde Park, Regents Park, St James' Park, Holland Park - if you have the time.
Okay thats London down in a very quick nutshell as i dont know specifics.
Paris: Eiffel Tower: Ofcourse, i need not describe it. Prewarning if your going up that the lift scares even those not afraid of heights. Arc de Triomphe - Its the big arch with the observation deck - very popular. Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris - Most people tend to go and see it just to say they have seen it, and not for the history, architecture, religion etc - But its a must if your in Paris Le Louvre - The famous gallery which holds the mona lisa with the glass pyramid roof. Sacre Coeur - Beautiful mosque on top of the city and with great views.
Wow thanks for that
I am going with a group form my surf club for the World surf life saving titles (not really to compete more to go to europe) its in Germany and after that as far as i know we have a 3 week tour planned and we are going to amsterdam possible greek islands and paris i think and then leaving from london. Not sure about my budget will probably be around 1500 to 2000 euro for the three weeks. I am hoping my bf will come too and then i will stay mayb a few months and work in london or somewhere.
Not sure what i want to see but things i can take photos of and say "i went there" are good the buses are a must haha and the louvre if im in paris and a few otrher places would be good. And a meet would be cool if i stay and work i will have time
I think i will definately need more than 3 weeks.
Those water bus things we have one on the gold coast its big with the asians it is in the shape of a duck at the front
I traveled round Europe last summer and had the time of my life. I'd do exactly the same thing in a heart beat. I met so many fabulous people - a few of which I'm still really good friends with.
I went with a company, where you choose a "loop" and get on and off as you please. You fly to one of the cities/towns on the loop and start there, they give you an AMAZING book and they organise day/night trips, bar crawls, adventure days, trips away to other place for a few days. Stuff like that. I went wine tasting, cycled round Paris for 5 hours at night (much more fun then it sounds), you can go paragliding, white water rafting, we rode horses on the beach, went on a pirate cruise round St.Tropez, music festivals in Nice, there's stuff like The Running of the Bulls in Pampolona if you're into that kinda thing. Always going to be things to do. ALWAYS.
Basically, amazing.
Let me know if you want any information on it, I've got loads of stuff.
Umm. I went to
Madrid, Sans Sebastian, Bourdeaux, Nice, Tour, Paris, Bern, Lauterbrunnen, Barcelona, Valencia, and 4 other places that I can't remember...
Hmm.
Italy! I went there too.
Anyway. Yes. You'll find that if you're staying in hostels, that they'll be full of information on things to do and places to go with discounts and all that lovely stuff.
Also,if you need a guide in Paris, totally let me know. I can walk around with my eyes closed and my hands tied behind my back =D
"Watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."
Go to Poland.
Basically. Cheap alcohol. And like..pretty buildings? Ones that aren't on the verge of collapsing cos no one bothered to refurbish them after the 2nd world war, obviously.
Go to Krakow.
And Rome. And Paris and London and EXMOOR. Yes, Exmoor is nice. Lotsa pretty wild horse running around.
I'd say Stockholm cos' it's great too but it's incredibly expensive.
There are some beautiful cities I would visit...
Vienna, Salzburg, Prague, Krakow, Wroclow, Bergen, Gothenberg...
The list is endless lol.
I've been to Bergen and Gothenberg and they are like SUPER expensive.

Well content loves the silence, It thrives in the dark, With fine winding tendrils,That strangle the heart,
They say that promises sweeten the blow, But I don't need them, No, I don't need them...
If you got to spain go to Bracelona and see the Sagrada Familia (it really is mazing), also the Dali museum and all the stuff on Gaudi, it's is stunningly beautiful.
There is also a little town on the coast called Tosa De Mar (Tosa on Sea), which is where I stayed with stunning beaches and scenery.
I love Vienna stay at wallabies for really cheap £12 for a double between 2!!! The city rocks, but a metro pass and use the tram to see all the grooviest bits!!
I love Barcelona, it's amazing, every bit (apart from the homeless people but they're everywhere!)
In Italy my favourite place of all was Florance, it's just beautiful!!
And as France just rocks my world!! Paris is of course the best known place, but I loved the Loire Valley more.
You lucky thing!!! I've travelled round europe a few times but I haven't done it for a couple of years now, and reading this has seriously given me the itch to go again *trots off to book eurostar ticket*
Play the game out

Dad 10/11/2008 Always our sunshine, I'm still playing for the town hall clock
I did the Italy trip with a Uni Art History seminar. While there I went to the Uffizi Gallery and from inside went to look at the Arno river through a Window. I didn't realise there were 2 panes of glass with about 7 inches separation. I was looking at the far pane and ended up hitting my head on the near pane that I didn't see. I made a loud "boom!" that echoed through the halls and brought frantic security running toward me (I was not far from Botticelli's Primavera).
Aside from that its a great place and a fav of people who travel A lot (the Italian director Franco Zeffirelli is the baby in my avatar - I like Italian culture) . If its summer I would skip Venice because its too crowded and a rip off. Venice is great but not when its like Disney (Santa Maria della Salute is a fav building/church of mine). Skip Pisa too imo. Florence and Rome I liked a lot. Siena is real olde tyme. I didn't get to Turin but should have (went to Ravenna instead to look at mosaics gah). Went to Zurich too and its was clean and nice but I stayed in the room the whole time since the exchange rate was murderous at the time.
I am perhaps going to UK in Spring but so far its just to see The Cure so not sure I'll linger around if I go lol.

Use a train to travel around, rather than flying. you get to see an awful lot more. Where you want to visit really depends on what interests you. I would suggest looking at and buying guidebooks for either the country or cities you will be visiting.
I've been to Germany, Germany sucks!
But the sausages are good.
And being me I would say don't miss Amsterdam!
Great............buildings, I hear............never been I wouldn't know.
Rome is supposed to be awesome too, and I would definatly suggect France, the food is AMAZING, and so is the wine, which is generally everywhere.
Dicky!
Barcelona is fabulous for a combiation of modern, historical, art, culture, beach & city. Plus, Gaudi is from there, and his impact is astounding on the city.
As Platinum said, Sagrada Familia is a must-see.
If you go to Paris, go to Le Louvre, but the city itself has so many other fantastic art galleries, that are far less tourist-y; the Musee D'Orsay is my favourite.
If you go to Poland, go to Warsaw or Krakow; I loved Krakow, it was such a beautiful and interesting city.
You could go to Ypres in Belgium, which is full of World War 1 history - moving, but fascinating.
Vienna is gorgeous, Naples is amazing, to show a different side of Italy (especially if you come from Venice and Rome, both of which are very affluent, and very different from Naples)
Hm. If you go to a beach-y area, for example, in Spain, avoid the real tourist beaches and go to the quieter ones; you'll get a far better experience of the culture!
Remember that for the most of the trip, you'll be okay with Euros, but some countries have their own currency.
InterRail as much as possible; so much simpler than flying!
